Surprisingly good movie
I bought this movie even though I'd never seen it. It was only $5, so I didn't have much to lose. Also, this year's Capitol Christmas Tree came from our state and went through our town on its way to DC, so I was interested in this movie. It was great! I was pleasantly surprised. Andrew McCarthy plays a widowed father who planted a tree the day his son was born. The son and tree are now 17. The tree outside the White House was struck by lightning and there is a contest offered by a toy company, offering the privilege of having the winner's tree planted in the White House lawn. The son wins the contest. The father and son drive the tree to DC. There is much excitement on the journey. The rep from the toy company (a beautiful female) comes along. The son's online love interest stows away on the trailer. I recommend this movie.

Good Adaptation of a Superb Novel
The National Tree David Kranes' outstanding novel, The National Tree, finds a solid adaptation in this Hallmark production. The essence of the book, a deep and evocative exploration of a father and son relationship, is beautifully captured in the film. The premise, a cross country trip to deliver the National Tree to the President's lawn is well rendered; Andrew McCarthy and Andrew Williams do a superb job. But in an hour and a half, the quirkiness and delight of the novel could not be completely explored. Kranes' characteristic gentle and offbeat humor comes through so much more completely in the book which has become a family Christmas Classic for so many people.

The National Tree
The National Tree was about a father who grew a great tree for his son who wanted to give it to the White House for Christmas. Hard to talk about the DVD without giving away the whole story. It was very good but was the excitement in the movie was a long time coming. It is worth the watch though.

Great movie for the family and the Holidays!
The National Tree is my favorite holiday movie. I could not find it on Amazon movies or Netflix this year, so I ordered a DVD to watch. It is very inspiring to see how a teen boy and his father come to terms by overcoming a number of challenges going across the country. The boy finally hears his father's disappointment and embraces the values his dad has been trying to convey. Great movie for the family.

IT WAS WORTH THE TRIP
A family film, especially if there are older teenagers. There is something there for the parents, too. Your kids cannotread your mind. They need to hear the words telling them they are special and loved and that they are proud ofthem. It was a wonderful idea for a film. Andrew McCarthy is a fine actor.

This movie sets a bad example for kids, nothing good about it.
I purchased this movie because I was looking for something new to watch with family on Thanksgiving. I figured I could count on Hallmark to make a movie that was suitable for adults and teens to enjoy together. I was certianly wrong about this one! This was something you could expect to see on the Disney Channel. Nothing but disrepectful children, inapproprate romances and an over emphasis on the preservation of a pine tree. The main character meets a girl online and arranges to meet her. They kiss on the first "date." The girl ends up riding on the back of a flat-bed semi, cross-country in the middle of November without any adult aware because the couple wants to defy the wishes of their parents, until she nearly freezes to death and is forced to ask to sleep inside with her boyfriend, his father, and his father's new romance. At every turn adults are made to look bad and children get their way by being disrepectful and disobedient. All safety and ethics are out the window to protect a pine tree from dying. Not a Christmas message in my opinion! It isn't even humorous. Environmental extremists and bratty kids will love this movie, but we didn't.

Andrew McCarthy Still Has Star Quality!
Andrew McCarthy is still handsome and going stronger than ever these days! It's funny to see him playing a dad instead of heartthrob Blaine from "Pretty in Pink" but he's great in this cute story. It's technically a Christmas tale I guess, but it's more of a romance film with both father and son finding their dream girls. I watch it anytime, not just at Christmas. Keep making Hallmark films, Andrew McCarthy - you're still got it!
