The spring-loaded base of the clip can apparently be twisted and snapped off if the dog flips around at just the right angle when pulling quickly. Luckily, she wasn't hit by a car when she took off running and broke free but I don't trust these clips anymore. The vet has since recommended to use a leash with a screwed in place carabiner.
