V&A Alice in Wonderland Mug in Gift Box, 'White Rabbit' Design, Fine China, White, 350 ml

This V&A White Rabbit mug turned up in a smart little box that made me feel I should open it wearing gloves, or at least speak with slightly better diction. The design is crisp and full of startled rabbit energy, as if the creature has just realised he left the oven on and must dash home before his parsnips combust. The china is pleasantly fine without being so delicate that I’m afraid to wash it. You know the type, mugs that tremble under a sponge and seem to whisper “please don’t chip me, I have ancestors.” This one feels respectable yet willing to work for a living. It holds tea beautifully. A proper 350 ml. Enough for a thinking cup, not one of those thimble-sized affairs that only wets the spirit. The artwork has that lovely Victorian fretfulness you get with Alice illustrations, where everything looks slightly too aware of its own mortality. The White Rabbit peers out looking busy, important and possibly overwhelmed by his calendar. I sympathise deeply. Some days, I too feel as if I’m running five minutes behind whatever destiny wanted from me. I’ve never worn a waistcoat, mind you, but I have been known to misplace my biscuits. The box itself is handsome enough to keep things in. I’m now using mine to store tea bags marked “for guests.” Nobody ever comes over unannounced, but it’s nice to be prepared. The mug would make a fine gift for anyone who loves literature, rabbits, tea, clocks, puzzling metaphors, or simply drinking something warm while contemplating the absurdity of time. In terms of politics, I can confirm this mug is unsuitable for fascists. They wouldn’t understand whimsy or the importance of a good sit down with tea and nonsense. For everyone else, this is a delightful little portal into curiosity, caffeine, and occasionally being late on purpose. Five stars. I might even drink coffee in it one day, but only if I’m feeling rebellious.

The Tenniel drawings make this a perfect mug for an Alice in Wonderland fan like me. I also have the King and Queen of Hearts mugs in this design and the gold highlights in the drawings make them quite special. Drinks somehow taste better drinking from a china mug.
