Good watering stakes - what you need to know for success
I'd bought some clay watering stakes before and the quality was very poor: 2 broken in shipment and one while removing from the packaging. However, the remaining ones worked so well I wanted to get more.It was hard deciding which to order because the reviews were so similar regardless of price and the stakes all looked the same in the photos. I decided to give these Juvale stakes a try because of microscopically better reviews. The Juvale stakes arrived in perfect condition totally encased in custom fit styrofoam. I was definitely impressed.I've learned that regardless of any instructions, that you can't press the stakes into the soil even with loose soil. In order to pass the needed amount of water these, clay stakes need to be thin and relatively fragile! The secret of getting them into the soil is to use a glass bottle press out a slightly larger cavity than the stake will need. Dig with a small trowel if needed, but finish off with the glass bottle and a little wiggle if it is smaller than the stake. Slip you stake into the soil and work the soil back up against the side to the stake. Add more soil if needed. You want to firmly support the stake all around with soil. Now, as long as you are gentle when you place your water bottles in the stake, it should last a long time. Don't expect one of these to water a large indoor tree for a month. They work well for me with 10" pots for a week or two even in Texas summer shade.

LONG time watering!
I bought this before an extended 2 plus week trip and prayed they worked to save my herb garden. When I returned after 2 weeks, there was still some water in the bottles and none of my plants were impacted by lack of watering. (Wind was a different story, lol) I have 12 of these, the larger pots get two, the smaller pots get one and every thing was so happy when I returned! I use plastic 2 liter bottles for outside pots, and wine bottles for inside pots. So glad I found them!

These really work!
These work great! I wasn't sure after reading reviews, but decided to give them a try before my vacation. I watered the pots first and was careful putting them in and I had no issue with breakage. I watered the pots a lot, filled the spikes and then set full bottles in them.I was gone for 6 days and when I came back the flowers were alive and the bottle still had some water left. I tried other methods to keep other pots alive that did not work so I know it wasn't rainfall that kept them alive. I will be buying more!Photo was taken when I got back home, that bottle was full when I left. One note the normal sized pop bottles I used were empty. That was a 1 liter bottle that still had some left.

Works great- wish we’d gotten them last year!
These are awesome. We planted some astilbe last year and they struggled terribly all season because we couldn’t keep them watered frequently enough. We placed these spikes and a bottle from Saratoga water next to them as soon as they broke ground. It’s only been a few weeks and some are already bigger than any of them got all last year! Came back to order more for the vegetables. They came all intact, very carefully packed in customized styrofoam cushioning- we are saving these specially made boxes to safely store them in the fall. We took the warning about not pushing on them seriously and used a piece of rebar to hollow out the soil before placing them uneventfully. Wish we had them last year!

Love these!
Love these! I put a wine bottle in my 5 galllon planter, water lasted about 4-5 Days, plant looks healthy. Recently had a tangerine tree planted with underground water hose. Tangerine tree was not doing well. I added the ceramic wick with wine bottle and it seems to be helping. Ceramic wicks seem sturdy.

Like these. Very useful
Use these for when I’m away. Last approx 1.5-2 weeks in larger plants. Although I tend to use two at a time. Are fragile but come packed nicely in foam - although I hate that foam can’t be recycled.

Great idea, poor execution
Liked the idea of these but in the hot summer the water remained in the wine bottle while the plant was wilting in the sun with dry soil.

Simples
Does exactly what it’s intended for. When refilling the bottle I put water into the spike first whilst in the ground, thumb over bottle end then offer up to spike. That way there isn’t much water loss from the bottle itself and you’re not having to force in quickly.
