Ansel Adams Wilderness,The

Image on the cover is the most beautiful in the book.
I purchased this book after it was recommended on a You tube video. The image on the cover is spectacular and the most striking in the book. I was hoping for more images like it in the book but was disappointed. In my opinion many of the photographs are mediocre and not worthy of a photo book. It is a very handsome volume, however and it wasn't very expensive.

Explore Ansel Adams' wilderness through the eyes of Peter Essick
Peter’s view through the lens of Ansel Adams drew me into this book. I could tell of Peter’s respect for Adams and for the “nature” he photographs. The Ansel Adams poster in my office evokes the same feeling as the photo of “Nancy Pass” (pg. 34-35)—(my poster photo is: 79-AAF-12 "Grand Canyon National Park," broad panorama with detail of canyon, horizon, and mountains above). The shadow and light effects on the stark landscape is what appeals to me. This book is more than just the photos and a photo journalists’ account of his photos, but it is a personal tribute to a master photographer. I especially enjoyed reading the “Photographer’s Notes.” Peter describes how and where he captured his photos, which makes the exploration of this book a very personal experience. Loved it!!!

An absolute treasure
I recently bought this book as gift for my 8 year old son who is a huge Nat Geo fan. He absolutely loved it! He has read it to me over and over. He will look at the photographs for hours and who could blame him? The photography is breathtaking, the absolute contrast between light and dark that the photographer captures with the black and white film is simply stunning. I plan to purchase at least one of the prints from the book to give to my son for his birthday. I would highly recommend this book to all ages as the images as so captivating.

Great black and white photographs.
I believe the photographs in this book are as good if not better than the ones Ansel Adams took in this same area. I have a number of books by Ansel Adams and am glad that Peter Essick did not duplicate the pictures that Ansel took. It gives one a different perspective of this area. The information about each photo is also very good!

Photograps done in the Ansel Adams style. Not by Ansel Adams.
The title of this book implies that these are Ansel Adams photographs. THEY ARE NOT! However they are done in the Ansel Adams style. Not as good perhaps (beauty is in the eye of the beholder) but interesting.

This Was a Disappointment
There are some spectacularly good black and white prints in this book, but they are far outnumbered by dull, medium gray, boring prints that I would not hang on my wall even if I had taken them. Really many instances fall to the level of illustrations in a geography text. It is really disappointing considering the high praise from The Online Photographer who frequently makes photo book recommendations and considering the reputation of the photographer. The photos are so uneven that I do not think I can bring myself to gift it.

Excellent book. I really adore the Ansel Adams wilderness
Excellent book. I really adore the Ansel Adams wilderness, Ansel Adams himself, and the photographer Peter Essick. The photography is first rate. The theme of the book superb. I really recommend it for anyone with a love of photography and the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

Peter is a great photographer. I knew him in grad school
Peter is a great photographer. I knew him in grad school. I knew he would go on to be one of the best. And he has. What a great set of photographs, and reportage.

Not as expected
It's my own fault for not reading the small print, but I was expecting a book entitled The Ansel Adams Wilderness to be a collection of some of Ansel Adams' superb photographs of the American Wilderness. Sadly, I was wrong - it's a collection of modern digital photos done by somebody else in similar locations and so not what I wanted. Instead I gave it to a friend who is into photographic techniques and she was pleased with it.

many of the best pictures are split by the spine and bled off ...
There are some superb photos in this book, but also some rather mediocre ones as well... which just fill it out. The format is rather small and a larger book would suit the epic nature of some of the landscapes. Also, many of the best pictures are split by the spine and bled off the page. Very common thing i know with picture books - why do book designers always try to fiddle around and put their stamp on the work of other artists? Would you frame a picture without a mount? no. Just keep it simple - one page, one picture. My particular copy reproduced a bit light on the repro, lacking solid blacks
