Not for entertainment!
I’d seen trailers and reviews of this film before I purchased it so I knew what to expect. But when you see the whole movie it does seem amazing that it got made, even in the more liberal, non-politically correct 1970s. The reality of the slave trade is of course shocking, but what I find even more surprising is why all the many hundreds of Haitian extras involved agreed to appear in such a film, and allow themselves to be portrayed as being subjected to such degrading, inhuman treatment. I suspect the reason is partly to do with the poverty experienced by most Haitians at that time and the ‘influence’ of dictator Papa Doc Duvalier who was in power then. Perhaps they were made offers they couldn’t refuse! Okay, it’s just a movie and they weren’t actually physically harmed, but even so…they must have felt it, psychologically. There’s a great deal of nudity in the film, both adult and child – another reason it wouldn’t be made today. But I suppose it is historically correct – sadly.Overall I would have to say that I found the film interesting, bizarre and shocking. But I’m glad I bought it, because it’s the truth that should be told…

Baffling!!
This is a very very weird film, And I don't really know what else to say. It's meant to show attitudes toward racism in the past, but has been acused of being racist toward it's black cast. It is for me a typical european product of the seventies & is like many things ti me from that category completely & utterly baffling. both mesmerisingly bad & wrong (like a lot things within the seventies) yet of its age & oddly mildly interesting. As for being racist toward it's black cast I simply couldn't say there is alot of uncomfortable stuff in there nudity & mistreatment. but is that for shock value. You'd have to watch & decide. I will say my copy has been watched but probably won't be watched again.

Makes 12 years a slave look like a walk in the park
An incredible account of the slave trade and the horrors inflicted and endured by African Americans and minority immigrants in America a couple of centuries ago.Makes 12 years a slave look like a walk in the park, a seriously misunderstood epic masterpiece both fascinating and highly disturbing yet compelling and thought provoking.See this film but be warned it doesn't pull any punches in fact it's likely to knock you out and leave you winded.

uneasy viewing depending on your personal stance / history - but definitely worth watching for the debate it should produce
I saw this at a BFI festival special and enjoyed it again the second time around. It is a film with a paradox. The film shows the absurdity and necessity of slavery but also highlights the essence of the film style - slavery is exploitation of another human and the film 'actors' could also be considered as being exploited and unknowing of how they might be portrayed in the film 'documentary'.Overall, this impacts on the psyche and how to understand slavery - the film is very dated of course, but you cannot not have a comment / discussion once you've seen this.
