I was a big fan of Zebra for many years but I strayed because I started to see some ink quality issues that seemed like more than a fluke. After years of reliable performance from the brand, I was seeing refills that didn’t work at all, worked a very short time and A LOT of skipping. This pen may bring me back into the Zebra fold. If you want performance in the absolute harshest conditions, your best bet is Fisher or Rite In The Rain. They are great for many things but, of course, there are tradeoffs. I think this pen is THE NEXT BEST THING for harsh conditions. What’s more, it has all the advantages of a good, normal pen with none of the disadvantages of those “extreme” performers. This pen can sit, unused, for 3 months in a freezing van in the middle of the winter or a broiling van in the middle of the summer and you can pick it up and watch it immediately write perfectly. No skipping, no early ink failures (so far). It does write on less than optimal surfaces that would be problematic for normal pens. Does it perform in conditions as extreme as a Fisher or RITR? No, but it is significantly better performing than pretty much any other pen, including other “extreme” pens I’ve used. However do NOT buy this pen. Buy the F-701. The X-701 is twice the price, but half the quality, of the F-701. Also refills for the X-701 are expensive and hard to get. F-Refills are inexpensive and plentiful. **Q: Is there an option for a blue ink refill for the X-701?** A: Hi. Not that I’m aware of. There’s only black ink refills. **Q: Does anyone else find the X701 BP to write very dry ?** A: Yes, Zebra makes great products but this one sucks on many levels **Q: what does one do to write with this? push something? turn something? where is the tactical end?** A: You just push the clicker on top, like a regular pen. It is military grade drop tested. I have accidentally dropped mine on concrete and it is still working! All of my other pens including my Fishers are not military drop certified! On the description is states that it is 5 times more durable than plastic pens, I agree! I have been using my pen daily since October 21st and it has yet to fail me. I sign Bills of Lading and other documents with it and not once has it stopped writing! The only thing I do not like and I have contacted Zebra, is that the black finish is chipping off in places. I highly recommend this pen as a everyday use pen!
