They are a thick flannel. I always wash before using new sheets and I felt that they needed it especially because I could smell the dyes, or something in them. That did wash out. Very warm! He does love them, as do I. If they don't hold up well, I'll update this post, but they are fairly heavy flannel and I don't anticipate problems. I am a quilter and clothing sewist, so I do know fabrics fairly well. Firstly, holy wah did the dye bleed -- it took two heavy washes before the water ran clear. Similarly, it lints up my dryer like nothing else. I was pulling bits of red pulling off of clothes for weeks, and I was pulling orange-sized clumps of lint from the dryer lint trap for the first few times I dried them.But! Apart from the washing-related issues early on, now that they're "broken in," they're quite nice sheets for the price. The flannel is not as dense and heavy as I'd like for keeping warm over these winter nights, and doesn't seem as sturdy as the set I bought a few years ago but they definitely are soft.
