50s All-American Ads

Absolutely love! I ordered this to be a coffee table book for my mid century modern office. *Chef's kiss!*

Bought for my 72 year old friend for her birthday along with the 50’s and 70’s. She loved all three and her trip down memory lane.

I have bought 2 of these so far when they are in sale for around $20. I enjoy the history through the decades approach. It reminds me of Mad Men and I like looking thru them with my 7 year old daughter.

Back to the days of old when advertisements appeared mainly in the print media and cigarettes, beer and appliances reigned supreme. Anyone who would like a taste of the times, this book is a realistic reflecting pool.

I like the ads as 1950s ads are very beautiful but I felt this book a bit lacking. Car ads had a lot of beauty to them but 140 pages was a slog as most had very close resemblance to each other. Comparing this to the other sections it feels like this book didn't consider design merit, diversity in ad style, or significance to the ads chosen. Food only had 52ish pages and there was only dairy queen to represent fast foods. Surly a burger King ad or something could be thrown in. There was also very few candy ads.....and no jello? Seriously not even one? Makeup/hygiene likely didn't even get 5 pages despite the huge market for it. This is not normally how I think but it really feels like the author didn't put much consideration for women viewers in this. Yes I'm counting 140pg of cars, 23 bra/womens undergarments, and 2 Avon ads. Not well balanced crossed what would be consumed by Americans.

Ein Paradies für Nostalgiker. Man kann stundenlang darin blättern und hat das Gefühl lange nicht alles gesehen zu haben. Einfach sensationell und dass für den Preis.

Il volume realizzato con la consueta cura dall'editore Taschen presenta, soprattutto tramite immagini, l'evoluzione della pubblicità in America nel corso degli anni '50 ed è interessante per vari aspetti, quello più ovvio, naturalmente è la conoscenza, attraverso la pubblicità, delle tendenze e delle mode anche culturali di quegli anni. Le immagini, gli slogan, le descrizioni per quanto descrivano una società ideale e priva di conflitti lasciano trasparire anche le paure per le armi atomiche e le emissioni radioattive che agitavano la popolazione americana in quel decennio. L'altro aspetto interessante è legato al nostro paese ovvero permette di farsi un’idea dell’influenza dei prodotti americani sul mercato nostrano nel decennio successivo quello del boom economico italiano.

I bought this for my dad as a Christmas gift. He absolutely loves looking through the old ads!
