5 Stars from my wife.
Disappointing after the excellent first season but there's something appealing about the show that will please many but certainly not all. When watching this on a weekly basis (as broadcast) you can easily forget the previous episode and get immersed in the newest crisis to hit Mr Sutherland's Presidency. "You're needed in the Situation Room", or " You need to watch this" or " We have a crisis, Sir". Yawn, yawn.Watching the box set at the rate of two or three 40 Minute episodes per evening it all gets rather repetitive in my view.I like a bit of meat on the bone. Sadly the series is mostly episodic, each individual story line starting and then resolved within the said 40 minutes. Not enough substance to give much characterization to the individuals and the episodes come over a bit rushed and shallow considering the depth of the crisis --- nuclear bombs, sabotage of space capsules, religious extremists, sinking of US navy ships, assassinations, sarin gas, airplane hijacking etc.,etc,. ---- the list of disasters is endless and major and deserving more than one perfunctory 40 minute segment.Talking about meat on the bone, you could get 4 Maggie Q's inside my wife without a bulge showing. What is it about female stick insects that frequent our screens ? Women like Maggie Q are not normal in my world so maybe I should expand my life. She certainly is an action queen and never fails to continue the back story arc of hunting down the perpetrators of the capital bombing that left Sutherland as the 'Designated Survivor' to wear the mantle of President and to bring some home-spun decisions to solve the crises faced by the largely 'amateur' Administration. In this season the story arc is expanded to search for the cyber hacker responsible for undermining the White House. As in '24' there are traitors and betrayals to be revealed which does add intrigue to the show, but this isn't as well written as that other magnificent Kieffer Sutherland series. There are some actors that have crossed over including Kim Raver (Audrey!Audrey!) playing a super powerful IT mogul, Andrea. We didn't quite get to the stage where Kieffer was crying Andrea!Andrea!A good little role for Michael J. Fox reprising his performance from 'The Good Wife' as a lawyer. It always helps when a nicely written villain flits in and out of a show and season 2 has a smooth, slimy manipulator that reminds me of the best of '24's' catalogue of committed traitors.I always imagine that Season 2 of a series should give the show's connections a chance to rectify, to improve, to enhance the series from the previous batch ---- depending on your tastes and personal preferences this season may meet your criteria, or not.English subtitles for the hearing impaired, 22 episodes of 40 minutes each, bonus features on disc 6. Mostly moderate violence, injury detail, language and sex.

MOVING PORTRAYAL OF ONE THRUST INTO THE LIMELIGHT
A year has passed since catastrophe propelled a reluctant Tom Kirkman into the Presidency. Staunchly Independent, attached to no political party, he is still finding his way - aware of his limitations, determined to do his best. At home and abroad, many believe he simply has not got what it takes - several eager to take advantage. Despite mistakes, he often surprises all.Admittedly many of the challenges are solved more easily here than they would be in real life, but viewers may welcome satisfying outcomes in a single episode. This is by no means always the case - some problems ever-increasing (hacking in particular) and shock tragedy casting a long shadow.Helping it all to work is Kiefer Sutherland as Kirkman. Here is a man of integrity and humanity, striving not to be held back by people with motives often most devious. One feels for the man when, already juggling with so many problems, an aide often rushes in with "We have a situation".A fine cast. Many moments to stand out, as when the President has to break bad news: "I watched his youth vanish before my eyes." In fact several times viewers may be more moved than expected.Twenty two episodes full of tension, scheming, downright treachery, deaths (some greatly regretted), triumphs, humour and warmth. Interesting extras.Kirkman himself may seem too good to be true. We can always hope that in real life there are leaders able to rise above petty politics - genuinely on the side of the people and doing much good.

Scarily real at times.
The follow on from first series. Starting to get a bit predictable but still holds the attention.

First rate series. Highly recommended.
Kiefer Sutherland can do no wrong in my view. 24 was amazing, but Designated Survivor is far more laid back. 24 kept you on the edge of your seat whilst this series is easy going but still of the highest quality. The stories are excellent and well within the bounds of reality. My only problem is the the President is a bit too nice. The episodes flow nicely and yes there are many surprises which only enhances the series. The really good news is that Netflix has commissioned a third series.Enjoy!
