Is there any way of replacing or charging the battery when it goes flat?

Not sure,becuse the unit is sealed,it my be the case when in use it gets a charge. You could try finding a chemical that will melt the resin sealant so you can get into it to replace the battery, there is a is a potting compound thinner on the market that electronic companys use to melt down the sealer, try looking on line for potting compound sealers & thinners.

What is the life of the battery?

Don't know, battery is incapsulated. I only used is temporary to set the timing on my Yamaha XVS 1100 Dragstar.
