5 lb 10 oz Book. Suggestion: Cut it into 4 volumes with an exacto knife
At 5 lbs 10 oz this book is ridiculous! I have a Levo Bookholder that can barely hold it. If you read at a table, you'll do fine. If not, you might want to do something like I did (see photo)--whip out an exacto knife and cut that sucker up. I had no qualms cutting mine into four volumes. The binding remained intact. I set the four sections in manila folders and wrote on the outside of the folder which chapters and page numbers each volume/folder contains. Much more usable. I could tote a volume or two with me on my travels.I've only had this tome for a few days, and I can tell that it is going to be well worth the price I paid for a used copy ($15.53 total with shipping and taxes). Following the pointers and checking further into the resources mentioned in the first chapter alone could keep me busy for a long time.

Perspective of The Source: A Guidebook of American Genealogy (Third Edition)
The Source: A Guidebook Of American Genealogy (Third Edition) If you are at all seriously interested in doing genealogical or family history research, this book should be in your library - and should definitely not sit on the shelf. I've been studying, learning about and doing this kind of research for seven years and in that period have read countless books, watched lots of videos, worked through many tutorials and spent hours and hours looking for my ancestral and family connections. I have found The Source to be absolutely the best repository of information about where to find the sources, how to do the work, and - especially - how to use the Internet in this work. Chapters are written by experts in the areas covered, the material is well written and the editors have done an outstanding job of putting it all together in a way that makes sense and flows. There is so much wisdom and information here I find myself taking notes as I read. Absolutely great! A "must have" for serious genealogists - and for anyone really wanting to learn how to find the people in their families who have gone before and left a legacy that helps define who we are.

Valuable information for the beginner or advanced family researcher . . .
The Source: A Guidebook Of American Genealogy (Third Edition) The Source is the recommended textbook for the intermediate course of the Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research, June 2009, at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala."The Samford Institute of Genealogy and Historical Research (IGHR) provides an educational forum for the discovery, critical evaluation, and use of genealogical sources and methodology through a week of intensive study led by nationally prominent genealogical educators. Students may choose one of the offered courses that range from a course for beginners to courses on specialized topics.""The institute is academically and professionally oriented and is cosponsored by the Board for Certification of Genealogists. The faculty is composed of outstanding nationally known genealogy educators. Begun in 1962, the institute regularly enrolls over 200 students from around the country." [...]Since receiving the book I have begun reading with the first chapter in order to be better prepared while attending the institute this year. As an "intermediate" genealogist I have already been reminded of many research guidelines which I knew but have overlooked. It is a very readable book but is also packed with information written by some of the most well-known experts in the field of genealogy.

Has a lot of information
This book has so much information on how and where to do your searches. I have been dealing with a family death and haven't had much chance to read yet. But upon it's arrival I did flip through certain sections to take a peek. I know when I do get time to continue searching my past relatives, this book will have great places for me to search and learn. I can't wait to dig deep inside and get started. Some of the places it directs I already knew about and searched, but this book gives you hints and places to look that I'd never heard about before. If this is a subject of interest to you, I believe this will be the best book for you. I did online searches on the topic before purchasing and I believe I found the best of what's out there in The Source. I has inspired my interest to higher level of interest. Can't wait to get involved and searching again.
