German-English Genealogical Dictionary

Was actually in what i would call “good condition”.

It is rare that I encounter a word in a German church book that is not in this dictionary; one of my most useful sources when translating old records...

Not only does this dictionary contain historic German terms that might not show up in current day translation tools, but it has an invaluable resource in the chart of German handwriting letters and numbers over the years. So many of the historic records were, by necessity, written by hand, and as the handwriting styles changed, the older records risk becoming illegible without a resource like this.

We have been gathering notes here and there during our genealogy searches that offer common words on baptism, marriage, death records and then we found this book that had much of that already done and in place and alphabetized. It’s a wonderful resource. The only reason I didn’t give it five stars is because the hand writing samples of specific letters and words are very pixelated. I would think with today’s technologies that a smoother version of the written letters and words could be obtained. Might be worth updating.

I wish I would have had this book six months ago when I was deep into German Church records. Great reference for those researching German ancestors. I look at it every time I dig into my German ancestors which is most of the time!

Amazingly thorough compilation of archaic but essential terms for genealogists. Very helpful! I wish the handwriting samples were done by hand rather than using a mouse. Thank you for compiling all of these terms.

Of all of the aids I have, this one is by far the best because it is so comprehensive. This book represents an enormous effort and I use it often. However, since I work with translations from German script (church records and the like) I keep wishing for a dictionary that shows the entry words in script. I also wish that this dictionary had a English to German section as I am always trying to guess what the words might be. I know it would make for a very big book but it would be priceless -never satisfied, i guess, hope springs eternal.

An encouraging intro to get the new researcher into German records started with a positive attitude. The alphabet cross reference of Roman to Gothic print and Fraktur handwriting is essential to reading old records. It even got me into some of Grandpa's old letters that Grandma saved.

So far, this looks v good. It has been most useful in helping to understand C19 German church records. It's not perfect, it would be interesting to see an English to German translation as well as German to English, but that's not its brief.It's not cheap, but for anyone serious about German genealogy, it's bordering on the essential.

Good dictionary,well laid out easy to use,specialised answered the questions i had. Took two attempts to get it one vendor did not have it in stock.
