California here, but in the winter the water does get cold. The Hikari brand wheat germ is all I have ever fed them in the winter months. It is a bit more expensive, but top quality food. Always get the large floating and feed same to Koi and goldfish.Switch to Hikari gold and staple in the summer.

The first thing you want to check when buying koi food is the main source of protein. Corn is the absolute worst thing you can feed your koi but it’s the main ingredient in most commercial koi food but Hikari food always has something like krill or shrimp as their protein source and never corn, not even as a filler. A good food promotes steady growth, reduces ammonia and nitrites from waste and Hikari food always have ingredients that help bring out bright colors in your koi too.

Fish eat it but not like other food. Not sure why they do not go after it as fast as the other food.
