As the weather warms toward summer, they told me to begin feeding the Staple type: a pellet that has more protein (has some fish meal) as opposed to the "vegan" wheat germ with no animal protein. So far, the fish continue to be healthy with no problems. In fact, the fish are growing. I bought the fish at a 6" size, and within a few months most of them put on at least a few inches. As the water warms, the fish metabolism increases and they seem to consume more food. I still only feed them sparingly. Overfeeding with any food will increase fish waste and put pressure on the filter system. The pellets float and don't readily sink. Which is good: it doesn't clog the filter intake. Now, I'm no expert on koi, and Hikari isn't an inexpensive food, but even relatively small koi can be expensive, so paying for a more premium food seems like a good investment.
