THEY ARE NOT. I have pretty bad (and worsening) adult cystic acne but my skin gets too dry to use anything that resurfaces the skin. This product allows you to exfoliate gently at your own discretion. Meaning, if you want a gentle scrub, don’t use too much pressure, for a more intense treatment you can leave it on your skin for up to 5 minutes!! Other washes would give you irritation and this one does not! I’m still recovering from a salicylic chemical burn on my face, but even with this wash applied to a previously damaged area, it did not aggravate it in the slightest. It kept my skin calm and started minimizing my acne within the second day (first day skin feels great but zits will come to a head since they are healing). I also had some flaking but it was due to the exfoliating property of the wash. Always use a good moisturizer afterwards, I use an emollient foam. On day 3 I have noticed the flakes are not there, and no new acne is coming up. I was going to wait until my hormonal acne flared up this month, to see how this product handled it, but I was so impressed with how well it worked and how little irritation I got from it that I had to make sure this review got on-site. Got tired of paying the member base fee and decided to experiment. Found this and never looking back. Small beads don’t feel like sand paper and I truly only need a dime size amount for my large face. It lathers up nicely, does smell bad and face feels great after rinsing it off. It’s working for me. The keys for me is washing my face twice a day with BP face wash 2.5%, using glycolic acid toner and moisturing. Prior, I would skip the moisturizer, thinking I didn’t want to oil up my pillow. A wrong move which caused me to breakout even more. Took about two weeks for my face to adjust. Don’t be fooled by the 2.5% Benzoyl....it’s incredibly effective. I’m older, but still get breakouts unfortunately here and there ( feel like I never left 16 🙄 ), and it’s the fastest thing I’ve ever found....and I’m an esthetician. Use it sparingly only in the breakout areas. And really never more than 1 night, next morning, and 1 more night. It continues to work, like a steak off the grill that continues to cook.
