Allen and Greenough's New Latin Grammar (Dover Language Guides)

High-quality reprint of a necessary desk reference for serious Latin
Dover Publications has produced a sharp, fine reprint of one of the standard English language reference works of Classical Latin grammar.I once encountered an atrocious 2010 reprint of Smyth's Greek Grammar by a company called Benediction Classics. The text was blurred and did not even represent the same edition that I had specifically ordered (1956, Harvard University Press – the standard). Thankfully, Amazon's respectable customer service refunded me in place of the non-responsive, scamming 3rd party seller.Unlike that experience, when I purchased this Dover Publications reprint of Allen and Greenough's New Latin Grammar directly from Amazon, the transaction was a delight. This is the standard Allen and Greenough text, and the quality of Dover's reprint is so high that it looks like an original.PROS•High-quality reprint with sharp text•Low cost, especially given how essential Allen and Greenough is for intermediate-advanced Latin study•Prime Shipping(possible) CONSome have complained that this reprint of a reference work that many Latinists use heavily only comes in paperback. I just received my copy a couple of weeks ago; thus, I cannot attest to its physical durability.OTHER•Although this is a paperback reprint, it is still far from being 'pocket-sized.' I know that this fact is not relevant for anyone who has used Allen and Greenough, but I thought that it would be relevant for brand new Latin students.• It is possible that using clear packing tape as a makeshift book cover would be a worthwhile project to keep this crucial reference work protected for the long term. I have not yet decided if I will do that or not.

Excellent and thorough
One of the most helpful and thorough books on Latin grammar I have ever found. My mentors have all recommended it and I completely agree. It is simple and clear, it serves well both in reminders for grammar and learning new information.

I am absolutely in love with this book
I am absolutely in love with this book; it is definitely one of the best, most concise and practical Latin grammar book out there. It is my go-to study material for certamen. However, I was sad to see that, when I had taken it out of the packaging, the cover was bent and folded. Other than that, I couldn't be happier with this purchase.

A reference grammar, but invaluable as such
As has been mentioned before, this is a reference grammar. That is, you use it when you're stuck. Cannot remember whether the verb gaudeo (to rejoice in) requires a dative in its 'object', like deponent verb 'utor,' to use? If it does you will be directed to a numbered paragraph explaining the matter. Do you want tables of conjugations and declensions? Same thing, and same for almost any question. You do not read through this book. You don't read through dictionaries. You keep it on the shelf for time of need, which invariably comes. When that need comes, this book is invaluable. I think of it as a 'must have.'

Very comprehensive and well organized
Intuitive organization, comprehensiveness, plenty of examples, but definitely not a textbook. Great reference.

Standard, comprehensive reference work
A copy of Allen and Greenough belongs on every Latin student and every Latin scholar's bookshelf, and in fact is probably already there. After more than a hundred years in print, A&G is still a reliable reference for all aspects of traditional Latin grammar, and is a more than adequate reference for everyone short of graduate-level philologists. The final sections, on prosody and metre, are somewhat dated but still provide a good foundation in the similarly dated terminology one inevitably comes across in contemporary works on poetry. This edition with the gold-coloured cover is indeed flimsy, however.

It's complete in scope.
The book is complete in its scope and is well organized. The book's physical size is convenient.

Nice resource, but very confusing
This book was a required textbook for my third semester fo Latin. It is very resourceful, however it is extremely confusing and hard to follow the sections. Maybe it is because I started Latin with a different textbook, I just felt that this was less organized in structure and hard to look things up quickly. If you are looking for a resource book this is for you. However if you are looking for a textbook I would go with something else.

Index inopérants
Les hyperliens de l'Index des Mots et Sujets, ainsi que celui des Verbes, renvoient systématiquement à de mauvaises sections. Il reste toutefois possible de retrouver unnuméro de section affiché dans un index par le biais du moteur de recherche de l'application. Les autres hyperliens dans le corps de l'ouvrage fonctionnent eux tout à faitcorrectement.

Probably the best Latin reference grammar, revised to take account of modern scholarship
There are many good Latin pedagogical grammars or ‘primers’, textbooks to learn the language from for the first time. In English, there have long been only two comprehensive Latin *reference* grammars, both by Americans: Gildersleeve and Lodge, and this one by Allen and Greenough. Both had been revised only to the early in the 20th century, and therefore there is at least one detailed Latin grammar, E C Woodcock’s New Latin Syntax, that is more up-to-date—but Allen and Greenough’s comprehensive grammar was revised by Anne Mahoney in 2001, and thus became a reference grammar both comprehensive and taking account of recent scholarship. It is both scholarly and accessible, and fully comprehensive—anyone wanting really to become familiar with Latin as a medium of prose and poetry should have it.

形式面
Focus Pub.
