Vonage Customers, Take Notice *by R***B on October 2, 2015* I just happened to receive a Costco thing in the mail that showed this exact product for a pretty good price. I looked on Amazon and it was an even better price ($89.99) because of the Deal of The Day. I always thought about moving away from Vonage and going to Ooma at some point and this was the prefect time. I couldn't be happier with my choice.Setup was a breeze and any questions I had were handled through Ooma's Online Chat -- they were excellent. I ended up getting a year of Premier plus a free phone number port for $99. I submitted the port order on September 21 and eventually got an estimated completion date of October 15th, and then October 19th a couple days later. The port completed ahead of schedule on September 30, only nine days after I submitted the request. All it took to take effect was a power cycle of the Telo and I was good to go!I learned something about Vonage during this process, however. After the port completed on their end, my account was automatically closed. I was okay with that but I wasn't happy that I had just paid my bill a couple days prior. Like most telco companies, they bill for future dates, so I ended up paying for nearly a month for something I couldn't use. What I eventually learned was that VONAGE WILL NOT ISSUE PRORATED REFUNDS, so please remember that if you plan on doing the same thing. Another thing to remember is that you can port your Vonage number even AFTER closing your account. Here's a snippet from their cancellation notice:"We’ll keep the cancelled Vonage phone number(s) for 30 days from the day you cancel service should you want to transfer it to another phone service provider. If you do not transfer the phone number within 30 days, it will no longer be available to you."That is probably enough time for Ooma to move the number. Anyone who wants to move from Vonage, I would recommend contacting support and set to cancel your account after your current billing cycle. You'll have the rest of your billing cycle plus 30 days to get the number ported which should be plenty of time.But going back to the Ooma Telo. Call quality is crystal clear, the web interface is very nice, and their apps are good. It is nice to receive a call even when I'm away from home. Even their basic international rates are very good. With the few times I dial internationally, it was definitely not worth it to continue with Vonage. If you don't have an International Plan, you need funds in your Prepaid account. You can also set it to replenish if it gets too low. The Bluetooth/Wireless adapter is a nice feature but I haven't fully used it yet. It can be used so you can place your Telo anywhere in the house if running ethernet cables are a problem. You can also pair it with your phone so you can send and receive calls from your home phone! Pretty cool, maybe a bit gimmicky, but it will come in handy if you keep your cell phone plugged in all the time.Doing the math, the Ooma Hardware+Premier will be paying for itself in about six months compared to Vonage. I wish I made the switch earlier. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Ooma Provides Excellent Phone Service and A Device with Many Extra Features. *by R***S on June 2, 2016* Ooma makes an excellent unit that works great. It's important to note that you need quality internet service to use Ooma. This is my second unit that I bought as a backup in case my original unit should fail. The original unit has worked flawlessly for almost two years. Ooma offers many extra features that are extra with most landline services. The extra internet features are very easy to setup and the voice quality is very good. The quality is so good we forget that it is not the wired landline service.We are using the Ooma two line feature but in some ways it does not allow someone to pickup another phone to join in the call, as the unit switches to the second line. I suspect there is a setting to allow a second user to join in the phone call. Now if someone is on the line every other phone will have the dial tone for a new line. A great feature is phone messages can be retrieved via email. Call forwarding is very simple and can be set to any phone including your smartphone. Another great feature is you can block any phone number or direct it to a message or whatever you want.Ooma service is relatively inexpensive and is as reliable as your internet service. If your internet service is unreliable or down, your Ooma service won't work during those interruptions. This the one downside to Ooma. The full year rate offers some savings so consider that as another benefit if you chose to keep costs down. Ooma will frequently offer something extra (device) for paying for a years service.If you plan to port your regular landline number to Ooma, it can take weeks so you need to maintain that number and service until the number is ported over to Ooma. It's unknown why it takes so long when cellphone service number porting can takes less than 2 hours or faster..The few times I've needed customer service, it's been good and reliable like the service.The Ooma extension modules work well and we have two units for separate phone areas. Once in a while they get flaky and a simple reboot (unplugging the unit and plugging it back in) usually solves the problem.)Overall, I consider my purchase of Ooma device and service an excellent purchase and it is a very good value. It's not free but it's worth it.
