what about shower seats

The ones I got were only 8" x 14" so you'd have to have a pretty narrow rear end to fit into that! Regardless, I don't think that they would be structurally suitable for a seat. I'd be afraid of it flexing enough to crack grout joints. Works great for our soap and shampoo though--much faster than framing in a niche.

If I am using 2x2 mosaic tiles in the back of the niche, will I have problems with the back flexing (since it does not reach the drywall)?

I've had no issues with flexing with mosaics. Once installed these are just as stiff, if not more, than cement backer board. No worries. They work great!

do I need special thinset to stick tiles to this niche?

Will this depth fit inside a 2 x 4 wall, which is only 3.5" deep?
