Denis WickDW5512 Practice Mute for Euphonium

I live on the third floor of an apartment building and play with a local community band. The literature that we perform is challenging enough that because I'm not a native euphonist, I still need to practice our music on my own time. This Denis Wick practice mute does a great job of suppressing the sound coming from my instrument so that I don't disturb the neighbors. From my experience, pitch does go a little high when playing with the mute, and while resistance is not a problem in the mid and upper ranges of the instrument, the stuffiness in the lower register naturally makes it more difficult to center pitch.If there are facilities that are available to you in which you can practice freely, then by all means use those. This mute is for those of us who reside in apartment buildings and shared living arrangements and do not have a viable alternative. The Denis Wick practice mute is perfectly suitable for my needs.

Last month I moved in to a building with really thin walls. So thin, I can hear my neighbors sneeze. I knew I wouldn't be able to practice much without bugging everyone around me. I prefer to be a good neighbor so I got this mute. It quiets the sound very well, without too much distortion of tone or pitch. This is the first time I've ever played with a mute, so it takes some getting used to. That said, my decibel meter app records my playing with the mute at around 60db, around the same level as my tv.

I bought this to try after borrowing a Best Brass travel mute that had very inconsistent intonation across the instrument's range (I have a Yamaha YEP-842S). This one has great consistency for both intonation and back-pressure from pedal Bb to high C. My wife has remarked that it tends to mute the higher notes less, which I noticed myself, but it's still tolerable.

Excellent item. I have euphoniums at two locations. I have a Silent Brass system with one instrument and needed another mute for my other horn. Frankly, the Denis Wick mute works as well for me as the Silent Brass. Unlike the Silent Brass, there is no amplification, but no exepnse for that either. This mute is very light and works perfectly, reducing sound to a level where I can still hear it, but others cannot unless they are in the same room.

Be careful of size. This mute is very large and wouldn't come close to fitting my small euphonium; however, the company gladly took it back and refunded my money. I found the same brand mute for a baritone from another company that fit perfectly and works very well.

It makes you quiet but it doesn't improve your sound so I could imagine getting kind of depressed having to listen to yourself for a long time on mute. Great for avoiding annoying other people. And sounds good without causing too much pitch and sound distortion.

The mute intonation is good, but it doesn’t mute as much as I would like, and the biggest objection is the fit in the bell- it only fits at the very bottom without anything to keep it from moving around and clanking off the bell as you play. I didn’t care for it.

Excellent construction, big as expected and enough muting power for practicing at home. Fits perfectly to the Yamaha YEP-621, probably also for the rest of the line and others brands

I was very pleased with the Denis Wick mute. I purchased it as this make is the best you can buy and I wasn't disappointed. It has enabled me as a new mature player to practice at home without annoying my wife or neighbours.
