The unfinished surface is good for wood burning to add flair to the fairly functional little paddle. I bought this paddle to spice up the bedroom a little. I have zero complaints about it. Price was good and the quality is great. I was worried at first that there might be slivers or rough edges on this paddle but that's not the case at all. This paddle is ready to get spanking or paint and finish however you wish. Between the wood paddle and the leather paddle I like the wood one more. It is definitely more solid. With that being said unless you are trying to leave bruises you will have to go a little lighter then you would normally with a leather one.
