The added width in the back is not necessary, but it does add stiffness to the belt, which was a common complaint on other 4" belts. The locking pin is plastic with ridges on it that doesn't make it that easy to cinch tight. I'd prefer they used stainless steel (like one of their competitors) for more robust design. All in all, it is comfortable and supports well during squats and deadlifts. Quality of workmanship is great.
