Effective, reliable and reasonably priced....essential for a hydro system.
This product does exactly what it says it does! efficiently too! this product is 3 bottles pH-up, pH-down and a pH test solution. (also comes with a vial to conduct the pH testing in AND a pipette which I thought was great, I ended up getting on before I opened the package assuming they did not provide one, but General Hydroponics really gives you everything you need to open the package and do testing RIGHT AWAY!) I tested this on my hydroponic system with a calibrated pH meter hehe.....I wanted to know how accurate the test solution is. The test solution runs on a color scale, acidic being pink basic being dark green. The scale is located ON THE BOTTLE! so you never will lose it. As far as my basic testing concluded, the test solution is accurate; the color changes are visibly recognizable and comparable to the provided scale. 6.0 is yellow, 7.0 is green, and both of these matched my pH meter (in approximation, don't expect to perfectly get a 6.3 or something, this test kit is intended for keeping pH in a safe range, you could play with it and get exactly what pH you want with the assistance of a pH meter but I am judging this based on if a user DID NOT have access to a pH meter going on the test solution only.) The acid solution is very effective, which is nice, you don't want to use a lot of product to achieve results and end up being in need of more solution spending more $$$. I suggest using this 1-3 drop at a time, waiting 20 mins or so based on water flow and size of your container, and doing another test. Don't over do it, always undershoot what you are aiming for; you will save product and also prevent too acid/basic solution......just be patient, eventually you will understand the power of the acid/base solutions and wont even have to second guess if you put too much in or not. All in all, this is a must for a hobby hydroponic gardener or even a professional. Having a pH meter is nice, but some times the calibration may be off and having another testing method as provided in this kit is a good safety. I enjoy testing my solutions BOTH with the meter and the test solution because I know with out a doubt if my solution is within the correct pH range. This will last probably a year or even more depending on how big your system is. Just use sparingly and maybe play with the testing solution with known known acid/base solutions so you can take not of what the ACTUAL color of the liquid will look like in correspondence with the pH. Maybe put some vinegar in the vial, drop some test solution and take note. you will see a bright pink color. add some of the base solution and you will see the color change in the vial....do this before you mess with your actual nutrient solution just to get a feel for the colors! 5 stars for: price, reliability, longevity of the product use and ease of use. General Hydro is kind of the "big boss" hydro company and they really know what they are doing. Every product thus far I have purchased is good.

Better than junk, that needs calibrating, all the time or does not work at all.

Compared General Hydroponics to Biopharm
(Note: Similar review under the Biopharm version as this is a comparison) A lot of people struggle with measuring pH and there are a lot of potential reasons such as pH pen drift, incorrect or inconsistent calibrations. I've sure tried to kill more than my share of plants chasing what I thought was a correct pH. I've also tried the strips, but old eyes, slight color blindness, and tiny squares don't play well together. So, I've moved to the pH drop tests and the plants are loving the correct range. I had initially bought the Biopharm 5.0-8.0 range drops and was comparing the results against the Biophbarm printed label. It was doing ok, but I was still getting some leaf issues here and there. Most of the variance was me not being able to compare the difference in the results to the label colors well enough. As I was looking for better measuring, I came across an image in the product description that I missed the first time around. This was the last image in the product details and showed 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, 7.5, and 8.0 pH color spectrum results that were perfect for me to compare against. I added that image to my phone and use it to set my pH on target every time. MUCH better than the printed label. Based on now being able to dial in my pH on target every time, I'm giving this a 5.0 since it's much easier with the Biopharm image. I have attached that image to this review in case it ever disappears from the product page. While looking at the reviews for test drops, I saw a number of concerns about the General Hydroponics using needing to use 3-5 drops with the Biopharm using only 3 drops. So, I bought the GH as well to compare and found that both the General Hydroponics and Biopharm versions performed equally well - as long as you ignore the printed label (see 3/5 drop comparison image). The General Hydroponics printed label colors are colorful, but were less than useful to me. The Biopharm label wasn't as far off as the GH label, but both add in additional 4-color printing issues. So, even though I thought I was comparing correctly against the label, both the label and my pen were off (see pen measurement pics) and the plants suffered because I believed the pen more. When I did my direct head to head test of the General Hydroponics and Biopharm against the same water source, I found the most equally consistent comparison to be 4 drops of the General Hydroponics and 3 drops of the Biopharm (see 3/5 drop comparison image). I've included an image of the 3 to 5 drop test. You can see the General Hydroponics is just a little darker but is the same hue. Remember that you are looking for that difference in hue, not the difference in lighter/darker. The lightness or darkness of the color is a result of how concentrated the indicator agent is - nothing more [more or less]. Of course, you could use more or less drops if that helps you tell the difference. I am 5-star happy with both the General Hydroponics and Biopharm. You can see how far off my ph pen was in the 3rd image. Definitely time to recalibrate or replace my pen. tl;dr: Both the General Hydroponics and Biopharm tested equally well for me. Ignore how light/dark the results are; it's irrelevant. Compare against the hue (shift from red<->green). Use the pH color spectrum image instead of what is on the bottle.

It controls ph
It worked for the most part, seemed a little hard to pinpoint exactly where i wanted it at but would get you around to about where you wanted to be but that also might have been measuring/user error Didn't kill my plants, used for 4 grows in my Tent a few years ago, I still have some left but I'm sure it's expired by now. ty Wish had a few more of the mixing vials tho...
