“Impressing people is utterly different from being truly impressive.” Everyone understands that Ego is something bad, that's a fact. Nobody likes to be with someone who is self-centred, who puts himself first before anything else. But in this book Ryan Holiday talks differently about the Ego. Yes, he shows the side of his Ego that everyone knows, but he goes beyond. I never thought of Ego as that damned self-flagellating thought that awakens other bad profiles of yourself. There are many healthy ways to massage your ego. We always resort to the easiest one, which is for credit, which is for applause, for recognition... This kind of massage is bad because you think you are becoming more and more successful. You get stuck in a vision that the world can disrespect you at any moment. This is not healthy. There are other ways, such as being result-hungry, that lead us to a not only better but more successful self-image. When we seek to massage our ego, we try to measure our success by ethereal points, such as meetings where we try to impress others or hours and hours of arrogant conversations. The things done in our lives should not be huge monuments that will last forever. This concept is perfect. It is very easy to live for the ego and still deny it for a lifetime. Not understanding the silent consequences of the ego is one of the main mistakes. To understand that the ego will always be there is another mistake. The ego does not disappear. The book says that threatened egoism is one of the most dangerous forces in the world. The trick is to learn from the experience of others. The trick is to do a self-analysis. Personal self-improvement leads to professional excellence and personal excellence. But professional improvement does not lead to personal excellence. Controlling the ego is a construct. It's not just because we sweep the floor once that will make it clean in the future.

This excellent book is well written and researched and very readable. Thought provoking and definitely one to keep returning to. I'm looking foreword to Ryan Holiday's next book (not to mess with his ego though...!). Buy this book and read it.

Buen libro, llego muy bien empaquetado.

Wirklich ein super Buch. Nicht nur für Leute, die ein großes Ego haben, sondern auch für alle anderen. Denn mit Egoproblemen hat jeder in irgendeiner Weise zu kämpfen. Wer das Buch gelesen hat, wird dies spätestens bei der Lektüre feststellen. Obwohl ich im Bereich Psychologie tätig bin, war das Buch gespickt mit vielen neuen und fundamentalen Erkenntnissen für mich. Ryan Holiday führt anhand mehrerer historischer Beispiele die Effekte von Ego in den Phasen und Situationen des Lebens aus. Dabei beschränkt er sich bis auf wenige Ausnahmen bewusst auf Personen, deren Hoch-Zeiten oder deren Leben bereits mehr als vierzig Jahre zurück liegen.Er vergleicht US-Präsidenten aus dem 20. Jahrhundert wie Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard Nixxon, oder Militärangehörigen aus Zeiten des amerikanischen Bürgerkriegs wie Sherman. Eine der wenigen zeitgenössischen Personen, die er analysiert, ist tatsächlich Angela Merkel. Nun mag unsere Innensicht etwas anders aussehen, doch ist es interessant zu sehen, wie sie in den USA wahrgenommen wird.Ego Is the Enemy sagt, dass Ego eben keine Voraussetzung für Erfolg und vor allem geschichtliche Wirksamkeit ist, sondern entweder unabhängig, oft aber sogar hinderlich ist. So betont Ryan Holiday, dass der oft für sein Ego angeführte Steve Jobs ja eben wegen diesem Ego aus seinem eigenen Unternehmen Apple rausgeworfen wurde. Erst nach einer gewissen Läuterung und mehr Erfahrungen kehrte er schließlich zurück. Nixxon hielt sich für unfehlbar, für über dem Gesetz stehend, und stürzte darüber. Für mich war die wichtigste Erkenntnis, dass die Priorisierung des eigenes Egos fast immer Lernen und Wachstum verhindert. Je größer das Ego, desto größer das Gefühl, angekommen zu sein, genug gelernt zu haben. Und genau das verhindert, dass wir uns weiterbilden, lernen, offen bleiben. Wer alle Antworten kennt, stellt keine Fragen mehr. Und scheitert früher oder später deswegen. Dieses Buch ist ein exzellentes Schriftstück, dass mich in meiner weiteren Karriere hoffentlich noch weiterbringen wird. Mach dein Ding, leiste gute Arbeit, aber nimm dich dabei nicht so wichtig. Eine klare Kaufempfehlung.

Firstly, this is a review on just the physical construction of the book. I will leave the content review up to other people and critics. This hardcover book is exactly as described. It is a vibrant and radiant red with nice bright white lettering. The book itself is extremely, extremely lightweight. But, it nonetheless feels very sturdy. The pages are pretty thick and seem very sturdy. Overall, I’m very pleased with the construction of this book. I have purchased far more expensive books that were not even a 10th of the quality of this book. Props to Ryan Holliday and the development team.
