They offer "good" protection. The ankle shielding could be better. The quality is great. The leather is really nice. The boots are pretty stiff, but comfortable. The fit is big. I wear a 13 mens. 48-49 in Astars and others. The 47 in these boots is roomy. The boa cable is my only possible complaint. It seems fine now, but I worry about the future. Luckily with the side zipper on the boot, I cinched down the boa cable and will not need to unwind it. I simply unzip the boot and it comes off easily. The boot fitment on the lower calf is a tad loose, but I wear leg/knee armor so it fits just about right. This is with the boa cable fully cinched*. If you have large calves, you should be fine with the amount of adjustment the boa cable allows. Overall comfort and walking seems fine.
