Manfrotto has lost the plot.
I had one of these 20 years ago and it was brilliant, rock solid. I sold it off with a lot of stuff when I moved country. This updated version of it feels a lot worse. Every part of it where there is a plastic lever or ring feels flimsy and lacking strength and precision. It pains me to say it, but after anticipating getting one of these tripods again I was profoundly disappointed from the moment I opened the box. not to mention it arrived broken. One of the plastic knobs used to drop the legs was split in half inside the box. That in itself tells you the story. The old version you could drop off a cliff and the foot of the cliff would have suffered, but the tripod wouldn’t even have a scratch. This version can’t even survive a day with a courier in the back of a van inside two thick corrugated cardboard boxes. Manfrotto seems to have gone on a process of chipping away at their standards for years. They look to me like a company that has done everything they can to cut every cost incrementally over years and have now reached that point where their products are a pale imitation of what they used to be.I know Gitzo is in the same stable, but so far they have survived more or less intact. So, save a little more and buy the Gitzo legs or just look for a completely different company that still puts the quality of their product ahead of corporate efficiencies.

First class finish on a first class performing tripod
This tripod is heavy, That said, it really is the first one I have had that is actually rock steady when in use. I use it mainly for studio work, but I have taken it out in the car and/or carried it up stairs, where the weight really tells. You do get your money's worth with this tripod, so I cannot complain too much about the weight.I use a Manfrotto 468MGRC2 Hydrostatic Ball Head on top of this tripod and the combination is excellent in use. The tripod is rock steady and the head is also rock steady when locked in position. I regularly use this set-up with a Canon 1D-X and 100-400 L lens, with zero 'droop' over a period of time. This combination of camera and lens weighs about 10LBS but the tripod/head combination handles it very easily in practice.I use the tripod WITHOUT the legs extended however and the vertical tube fully down, as this gives the best stability of course, which would be true for any tripod/head combination, no matter the make. The legs will also extend to a set length if needed to do so quickly, by using the red coloured levers. This is a feature I seldom use as it happens, but it might prove useful to other users.I have had this tripod for 2 years so far and have found it excellent In use for holding my heaviest kit in a fixed, rock solid position and have no reservations about recommending this tripod to anyone looking for a high quality finish, properly solid tripod. Especially if they use the same model of head as I do on my tripod.

Manfrotto tripod 058B
Good quality with lots of options for movement. It is heavy for me so will be used in the studio and garden. I use a carbon fibre lighter model for field work. I am a 5' 3" retired female with arthritis. A fit, younger person with more upper body strength should be fine. One leg lever is stiff and the other two are easy to operate. I hope this will loosen with some use.The greatest attribute is the ease with which the legs can be lengthened and moved out for a broader base.It was easy to put together, just follow the instructions patiently.I bought the Manfrotto 229 3D Pro Head to go with this tripod which is a good match.Initially I was going to buy the pistol grip head but comparisons on the Manfrotto site suggested this was not strong enough for my camera and might be difficult if arthritis was an issue. However I will buy this in future. I saw Sandy Puch use this combination and was impressed with the ease she operated it.
