Woodstock D2845 1/4-to-1/2-Inch Mortising Chisel Set, 4-Piece

Bought for my garage shop. Retired to new career - home renovation and adding 950 sq ft to attic area. Works great, good price.

I have a Delta mortiser and I needed some replacement bits, if for no other reason that i don't use the mortiser all the time and over time the bits can get lost or rusty. The locally available Delta mortising bits are rather expensive so I decided to order this set instead. For price there is no comparison -- I couldn't touch this Amazon price on individual bits anywhere, so I bought them. There was a problem with the chisels. The shank of the chisel didn't match the dimensions of the collar on the Delta mortiser into which they are inserted. I solved this problem by reaming out the mortiser's collar (it's like a short piece of metal tubing that surrounds the chuck area) to a slightly larger dimension, then i was able to insert the chisel in there and clamp down on it with a set screw already in the unit. If you do this, just be as careful as possible to keep the ream out area on center. Mine is a little off center so it inhibits bit rotation very slightly at times, but it is not a big problem, and the mortising chisels and drill bits work well. What if in the future I decide to go back to Delta bits for the mortiser? Well, then I would have to buy a replacement shank from a parts supplier. I am happy with this product, especially the price.

Very pleasantly surprised at the value of these chisels. They are better quality than a different brand that I originally purchased with the mortising machine. Be careful, though, some machines use 5/8ths shank bits. These are 3/4".

Chisel itself is sturdy and might work properly but no chance to use it since my standard drill press can not use such a long mortise chisel because there are TWO reasons why... 1st one is that once I attach the chisel to drill press, I have no space between chisel and drill press table and I can barely have only thin wood to drill which absolutely doesn't make any sense. Second of all, as long as the drill press is NOT a special one which is fit to mortise chisel, the square shank of chisel will be spinning and can't not make a square hole but only normal drill hole. I hope the description at Amazon was supposed to be more accurate and mentioned about special drill press is a MUST to use this product.

I was worried when I ordered these that in compared to the regular priced bits these cheap bits would be dull and work poorly. To my surprise they worked great. They squeal on occasion, but besides that they cut square holes just fine. They leave a not so pretty bottom, but nothing a quick chisel could not fix.

So far these have worked very well with my HF Mortise chisel press. They had a very poor sharpening from the factory. But after only a few minutes on each one I was able to greatly improve the edges substantially.

it doesnt fit the delta machine i bought. i wish they did, they look real sharp. thats why i gave em 5 stars.

Excelente herramienta para hacer mortaja o caja. Muy práctico y preciso. Altamente recomendable para quienes se dediquen a la carpintería.

Always good practice to have a spare set, don't wait til you really need it ! For the price, it's an OK deal. Won't fit on all mortising tools though !
