Good Calories Bad Calories Fats Carbs and the Controversial Science of Diet and Health

A worthy addition to your library.
This book introduces readers to a paradigm shift in the way we think about food, calories and healthy eating. The essential gist is, at the risk of gravely oversimplifying the central thesis, that a lot of what we know about nutrition is based on faulty studies and has been driven by powerful lobbies with vested interests. Fats are an essential part of a healthy diet and it is sugar and mainly carbs that are to blame for the obesity epidemic and a range of other metabolic issues. This is certainly a dense read but I came away intensifying my knowledge about nutrition and appreciating the very thorough research Taubes has put into this work. Recommended.

A fascinating book destined to change your relationship with food forever
A thick veritable tome of a book. Although Gary Taubes' book and his conclusions seem a bit fanatical IMHO, and need to be taken with a good dose of salt, there is no denying the fact that the balanced message is true and shocking to those who are new to the low-carb movement. I think both Dr. Robert Lustig's book "Fat Chance" as well as Taubes' book have drawn a fair bit of criticism, almost no one disagrees with the broad strokes - Refined Carbs wreak metabolic havoc to our body in pretty much the same way a hurricane does to a metropolis, and the much-maligned fats are not so bad. Heck, fats and proteins are really, really good for you!Fair Warning: The book is a tough read, even for somebody familiar with the jargon, but in my opinion, it is well worth it.Highly Recommended.

A Must read for those who are in their fat loss journey and for fitness professionals and dietitians
The book presents a systematic compilation of researchs done in the past century on diet, obesity and cronic deseases. Great work by Gary Taubes in bringing them all together. Various interpretations, assumptions and hypotheses discussed really helps in understanding the topic in depth

Great book, even if you do not agree with everything at least you will find an alternative to all the 'Conventional Wisdom' floating around. The Author makes an honest attempt to support everything with an evidence which is very credible. Must read for anyone who wants to understand nutrition in the modern world.PS: Not too heartening for vegetarians like me.......but a great learning anyway.

Don't buy
Don't buy it unless you are doing some research. This is for people who have time to study whole the science about calories and other stuff , this not helpful if you are reading this as nutrition guide .

A Solid Look At Fat Metabolism
Great book by an investigative journalist who leaves no stone unturned to arrive at a strong argument about fat, how we get fat and how to turn the trend around. This work is well researched, annotated and backed by a clear presentation. It is very valuable to health professionals and those who want more than a cursory look at the topic.

WOW. Just wow. This book is an amazing tour de force which really spells out how such twisted messages around carbs/fat/fibre/sugar have reached the public - in a scandalous way. A real expose of a book. It describes how many myths have been perpetuated by the media; how academics and their personal allegiances and personalities have influenced the outcomes of scientific research in a very non-scientific way; and exactly why carbs are so bad for us. I am immediately going to read all other books written by Gary Taubes. This book is VERY INVOLVED, so if you are looking for a simple overview or you don't want to get lost in the nitty gritty detail, it may not be the best book for you - but if you love to get stuck in and make decisions based on facts themselves, then this is THE book. I think it is possibly the best book I've ever read from a readable-science perspective...

Does not do what it says on the tin.
I thought this book would advise what was good to eat or not, which I suppose it does. But it is basically an intense review of evidence, with no actual practical advice. I lost the will to live half way through the third chapter.

Extremely interested
I would recommend this book without hesitation for all those with an interest in diet and food related issues. It reads more like an academic text than most books on the subject, which is a refreshing change. This is amongst the most intelligent of books on the market - and in reality i can't recommend it highly enough.

Excellent information
Bought for husband who is keen on scientific issues. He was very impressed and is keen to put some of the ideas into practice. I think he was impressed with the book, but it is a very detailed book so do not take it on lightly!
