I have small feet so I had to redo the straps but having figured that out I was good to go. I also realized the spikes loosen after extended time. Carry the tightening tool in your pocket to tighten periodically. They get muddy and you don’t want to take them on and off. I plan on trying to add another nut to the bottom of the boot to give the nails more stability, but will do that in the spring. ### ⭐⭐⭐ 3.0 out of 5 stars Effective..but hard to use *by J***E on Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2019* This device worn on an ankle high boot, as recommended, makes for a very heavy set of footwear and a very slow and tiring workout...not to mention that if you lose your balance, watch out!! And you have to put them on (a chore in itself) while sitting on or close to the lawn and very carefully stand up. The biggest nuisance is pulling up a clump of turf that sticks to several spikes if you happen to "walk" into a soft, moist patch. It's a pain to dislodge, but if you don't do it the aeration won't be effective. Enough of that!So, I came up with the idea of using the spikes to make an aerator tool, as shown in the pics, that I found easier, faster and far less tiring to use. It's made from 5 x12" 1/4 inch hardwood stock (not plywood), e.g., maple, and a single 8-foot piece of 2x2 pine (actual 1.5x1.5), and L-brackets for framing. I used 16 of the total 22 spikes. The unit is about 3' high and there's about 5-6" of space for my foot to press on the aerator plate. The brackets are attached to the plate with no. 10-24x1/2" machine bolts and nuts. The other L-brackets are attached to the framing with standard wood screws. To ensure maximum extension of the spikes through the plate I used a 5/8" spade bit to carefully drill a countersink hole so the heads would be flush with the surface, then used a 1/4" drill bit to enlarge the center hole for fitting the threaded part of the spikes through. The 5/8" diam. of the hole allows space for a 7/16" socket to hold the spike hex head as the nut is tightened on the other side with a 7/16 wrench. The edges of the handles are rounded with sandpaper for a more comfortable grip.My "redesigned" aerator works great. I step down in the space between the uprights and easily pull up and repeat as I slowly move around the lawn. If you press into soft, moist ground, rock the plate side to side and to and fro a little before pulling up slowly to avoid dislodging a piece of turf. If you do, just invert it and use a putty knife to pull the patch away from the spikes. Hell of a lot easier than dislodging a turf patch while wearing the aerator. I'll probably attach a screen door handle to the side of the upright to make it a little easier to invert it to clear the plate.For me... 76 years young...so much easier and more efficient than using the foot aerator.. And much less tiring!!! I tried to find these threaded nails on line, but so far haven't discovered any...may be a proprietary design. Ended up spending a lot of money just for the spikes.
