High quality, but a bit narrow

*by L***T on Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2017*

I bought two of these to replace a fender on my Wells Cargo box trailer that I'd damaged in a tire blowout, and I wanted both sides to match. They are reasonably heavy duty and look like they'll hold up well, and my trailer looks great again. Installation was somewhat difficult because of the need to remove the inner paneling of the trailer and install a 3/4" plywood brace to support the carriage bolts that hold the fender on (self-tapping screws into the metal studs of the sidewall would be easier but less secure), but that's not the fault of the fenders. The flange on the fender was wide enough that I had no trouble drilling 3/8" diameter bolt holes in them or putting nuts on from the outside, where they sit against the inner side of the fender. The main downside is that they're narrower than my original fenders. I don't know if my old fenders were unusually wide or if these are particularly narrow compared to other fenders, but these fenders are about 9" wide, and the outer edge of the tires I run (ST205/75-15) sit 10" from the side of the trailer. I cut some 1" spacers to move them out so that they cover the outer edge of the tire, but a stack of washers would have worked equally well. I haven't used the trailer in the rain or mud since I put the fenders on, but I am anticipating that I may have trouble with mud and water splashing against the side of the trailer through the 1" gap. In that case I'll have to figure out some way to close the gap. Also, if you're considering replacing your fenders with these, don't forget that you'll have to paint them. I knew that, but I underestimated the time I'd spend getting the paint to look decent (although again, it's not the fault of the fenders that a lousy painter). I put a coat of good primer on them followed by a coat of silver, which makes the trailer look the same as when it had the original diamond plate fenders, and I'm happy with the result, but if I ended up spending a couple of hours prepping and painting them, then another couple of hours sanding them down and painting them again more carefully so I didn't get drips. If I had it to do over, I might be more willing to pay the considerable extra cost of aluminum fenders. If your tires sit close to your trailer sides, or if you have an open trailer that just needs something over the top of the tire, these are great. If your tires sit more than 9" out from the sides of your trailer, be aware that you will need to do some extra work to get these to fit.

Good quality, but no hardware at all

*by G***H on Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2012*

I guess not having any hardware or holes is either a plus or a minus depending on how many other constraints you have on mounting these. For me it meant I had to go spend another $30 on stainless bolts at Home Depot. You could do it cheaper, I know, but I hate rusty threads. The steel is fairly thick and sturdy, with about a 3/4" flange on all edges. I do wish they had deburred edges. I realized after painting them that the sharp edges will probably start to rust. We'll see. After wiping down with alcohol (they come fairly oily from fabrication) it took one rattle can of rustoleum clean metal primer to prep, one can of rustoleum truck bed liner for the top sides, and one can of rustoleum rubberized undercoating for the undersides. Including hardware and all, I'm about $100 into these fenders. Probably worth it, but it's more expensive than it seemed they should have wound up. The good news is once attached (7x 1/4" ss carriage bolts per fender) they're plenty strong to stand and sit on.

Make sure to scuff the fenders before you paint.

Great price and more solid then I expected.
