As for packaging, the piece came it's own box that was packed inside of a shipping box that was also packed with paper. I felt that it was pretty secure. No damage at all. The back of the arrangement is indeed flat but it suits my purposes just fine. I guess if you needed to you could simply add some more peonies to the back but don't quote me on that. I really loved this arrangement and my family did too.
