Using thick markers creates a line that is off center on the ball. It works fine with thin marking pens but those don't leave a thick line that is easier to use on the putting green. I might experiment by grinding away a little metal so that an ear tag pen or other thicker pen will leave a line dead center, right on the equator of the golf ball.
