I ended up cutting off the straps and hinges and folded an old bathmat in half while sewing the straps to it. It's so, so very soft, they always have one in their cage while the other one gets washed. I clip it together and in the washing machine it goes, washes up really well. My three girls all pile in together, sometimes inside or on top. It's adorable seeing them all piled on or in together, more so when inside and you see a little nose or two poking out The first couple they had they did chew the top cover apart, but I expected that to happen (especially with one of my girls).
