There is no such thing as a self-cleaning aquarium

Is there hole in the lid to feed a heater cord through?

Yes there's a tiny gap on the back side of the lid for a heater cord. As wells as a small gap toward the front which you can throw food through or use it to put your finger to grasp the lid and open the lid out.
