There are three leads per pencil.

Are the erasers smudge resistant?

The erasers suck. They really, really suck. All they do is smudge. This is very disappointing because the pencils are great.

are the leads refillable?

Yes! Just gently remove the eraser and put refil lead in the chamber. Hold the eraser end of the pen and gently replace the eraser!

Are these good to use for 3 graders to use for school?

My then-3rd grader used these successfully last year. He's hard on his pencils! I bought a special (good!) sharpener but would still rather use these, plus they're great to carry in a purse/tote since the lead retracts. Great if one kid does HW while the other plays sports, visits doctors, etc. As someone else wrote, skip the .5 mm lead and get .7 or .9
