How many cans does it take to cover the average tub?

I purchased this product at a local store thinking 2 cans would knock it out. My tub was not far off from being white anyways.

I performed the instructions on the can explicitly, and realized that this project was a lot more work than anticipated and that waiting a couple of days to add more paint wasn't a good option.

I spayed one full can and covered almost all of the tub. There was very little difference after one coat, but I know that a second coat is generally when you see big color changes. I'm a rattle can pro. I've got awards to prove it.

After waiting the required time,  I started spraying a second coat.  My heart sank. The second coat wasn't even close what I expected.

I knew immediately that more cans would be needed.

I drove 10 miles up the road and bought all 4 cans the store had. Going off the Sq ft of coverage presented on the front of the can I felt confident I had enough to cover the tub and add some extra for better protection.

Went back home and applied all 4 cans thoughout 4 more coats applied evenly.

I have never been more disappointed in all my life. I honestly considered the equipment that fills the cans with paint must have been faulty and I bought that batch.

No area of the tub made it to being fully white. There were still sanding marks showing through SIX coats of paint.

Needles to say, I should have researched it before getting that deep into it, but that's my mistake and I learned the hard way.

The 2 part application kit from rustoleum is by far the superior application method and you can buy 2 kits cheaper than I spent to fail miserably.

If you buy this product, you will be disappointed.

Question 2

We recently painted the tile of our tub/shower surround with Rustoleum tub and tile paint, will this help even out portions that aren't covered enough

My experience is no. The spray cans coverage is quite thin and limited in coverage. I tried 2 cans as a final application and it did not meet my expectations. I'm now going to add an additional coat or two.

Question 3

Our tub has been painted before us and started to peel now. Would this cover?

I had a Scratch and started rusting about four inches from the drain I cleaned with wet sand paper 1200 grit then sprayed it is around 6 inch patch it sticks out it is not going to match the tub color it is 3 weeks and holding I am due for renovation next year  I hope it last that long
