I started baking bread (from scratch, no breadmaker) over forty years ago, and for a time was even working with my own sourdough starter. Now, at seventy-three and with a lot of medical problems, my favorite word is "shortcut"! That being said, if the product isn't up to my tough standards, the shortcut is worthless to me. And let me tell you, this bread more than satisfies those standards. I used the Basic setting the directions call for, and my breadmaker yielded a dense (love it!) European-like loaf. While I do wish some of the ingredients were a bit more "healthy" (I'm a stone-ground whole wheat woman), it does have one very healthy factor in it's favor: the sodium content, at 23 mg per serving, is outrageously low! Have to add: the crust is truly crusty, not just darker and chewier than the rest of the loaf, as every other bread machine recipe I have ever made; and, it even looks beautiful, with wonderful cracks on the top. I add a few things like chia seeds and oatmeal to beef it up, but the sky is the limit to what you could add. I have a bread machine that I let do all the work until the rising function.
