They have been sitting out in my field in full sun by our bonfire for at least 10 years now and have held up just fine. I also have been quite rough on them, dragging them around to mow or depending on the size of the fire and they stay out in our snowy Minnesota winters. I'm getting ready to re-do the wood on them and plan on making them shorter. I did have to add some support in the middle for an 8 ft bench because it wasn't strong enough. This time I'm going to still use longer 2x4's or maybe even 2x8's, but will leave a foot or so hanging off each end for side tables. Don't need quite as strong of boards for the back so not sure what I'll use for that but the possibilities are endless. I love these! **Q: Are they only frames? Do I need to buy wood?** A: Yes you need to buy 9 pieces of 2x4s. I used premium pressure treated lumber and cut to 48 inches but you can make your bench longer. **Q: What is the weight capacity?** A: I think this can handle the weight of just about anyone. several hundred lbs I suspect. Mine is 8 ft long. The problem I had was not waiting until the 2x4 were fully cured before coating them with poyurethane. If they are not truly dry they will turn black under the poly. Most of the time you get treated 2x4s they need to dry for weeks... **Q: Has anyone used the plastic lumber (recycled) to build a bench?** A: The brackets are designed for for 2x4 (1.5x3.5) lumber. If the plastic lumber has the same dimensions, it should fit. Just be aware plasic lumber will require more support than actual lumber. I ordered 2 pairs of brackets for my dock bench. The bench is 8' long and I used treated lumber. Nevertheless, I was concerned about it sagging when several people sat on it. I modified one of the brackets by cutting off the arm rest and used it as a middle support. The bench now has three supports and it does not sag.
