Based on the Broadway play, BUTTERFLIES ARE FREE is a sensitive, touching comedy about a blind young man, Don Baker (Edward Albert) who is determined to make a life for himself despite his handicap. Leaving the security of his parents' home, he takes an apartment in San Francisco, promising his overprotective mother (Eileen Heckart, who won a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this role) that if in three months he can't make it on his own, he'll return home. His first acquaintance is his next door neighbor, Jill Tanner (Goldie Hawn), an eccentric aspiring actress. Jill is charmed by Don's quick sense of humor and they become fast friends and lovers. Their relationship is threatened by Don's mother's intrusions and by Jill's lifestyle when she is offered a part in a play by a theatrical producer who wants Jill to perform offstage as well as on.

Soars Above the Rom-Com Genre with Snappy Dialogue and Drama that Tugs at the Heartstrings
I heard of this movie back in the 70s, but I hadn’t seen it. As I was browsing Prime Video, it caught my attention. I thought I’d watch half an hour and go to bed, and then finish it another day if it seemed worthwhile. I got to bed way too late that night. The movie has an early 1970s San Francisco vibe, which is fun to see. I thought I’d be watching a rom-com, but it’s more of a comedy drama. The meat of the story is not a romance but character growth and a changing relationship between an overprotective mother and son. Goldie Hawn’s character is flighty and committed to having non-committal relationships, and she doesn’t want to change. Her neighbor is a young man struggling to live independent of his overprotective mother. At first, the mother is annoying and unlikable, but by the end of the movie we see her deep love and wisdom as she makes a difficult choice. Edward Albert endows his character with charisma and handles well his character’s strength, wit and vulnerability. The story is simple, taking place over two days. The ending is almost heartbreaking, but the characters mature and make it hopeful.

Still funny and wonderfully touching
This was one of my favorite movies from my younger days. I had not seen it for many years. The play ran and ran and ran. This became much better as a film. This little gem of a film still shines. Goldie is hilarious, and Eileen Heckart is superb, and Eddie Albert Jr. was wonderful. Strangely it is not dated and stands up well and still remains fresh and funny. The funny lines and situations are to die for.

Interesting, historically
The actual movie is quite odd, but it reveals a lot about how moviemakers and moviegoers thought in the 1960s.

one of the best movies I have ever seen
Title says it all. It was very much like a play and I guess originally, it was. So hard to find smart movies like this. Glad the algorithm kept pushing it on me or I might have passed because of the title (which actually fits).

View this movie if only to see Goldy running around in a small swim suit.
I love 60s movies especially to see the girls.

Beautiful
The acting in this film was excellent. The dialogue was simple yet powerful and touched on so many emotions.

Pleasantly surprised
This movie was adapted from a stage play, that occurs in one room (his apartment). If you can hang in there, you'll see the movie change from a silly one-act shallow dialogue into a sensitive narrative about a young attractive blind man and the young free spirit (Goldie Hawn) who is afraid of commitment, especially to him. The scene at the end brought tears to my eyes. Edward Albert (son of actor Eddie Albert) gave an Oscar-worthy performance in my opinion.

It was the 70s
I love older flicks and this one didn't disapont. Definitely a more wholesome 70s movie.

Charming, and very much of its time.
This is a review of Butterflies Are Free [DVD] [1972] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]This film is absolutely charming, and very much of its time, “flower power”, “peace and love”, etc.. Goldie Hawn is at her vivacious best. Eileen Heckart thoroughly deserved her Oscar for best supporting actress.Oh, the film also has the very last line to end all last lines, it's a killer! If you do not have a multi-region player the DVD will play on VLC media player on computer despite being Region 1 or A. It does take several minutes to “buffer”, or something. I must admit that this caused me a little unnecessary concern at first.Pity, it doesn't seem to be on sale on Amazon at the moment, (06/04/23. Perhaps it will return shortly). Alternatively, it seems the film can be rented or bought on Prime Video.

Highly Enjoyable 70s Romcom
First off, this is a Region 1 DVD that will not play on standard European Region 2 devices. However, this is clearly stated in the product description and should not come as a surprise to buyers. The DVD has optional English (and various other foreign language) subtitles. The story is a rather sweet rom-com starring Edward Albert as Don, a blind young man who has recently moved into an apartment in San Francisco after so far having led a very sheltered life with his overly protective mother, and Goldie Hawn as his free spirited neighbour Jill. Within minutes of striking up an acquaintance they have managed to open the connecting door between their adjoining apartments and Jill has, to all intents and purposes, moved in with Don. Through her, he experiences a side of life he never knew existed. Their bohemian lifestyle is threatened when Don's mother calls in for a visit...The main attraction of the film is probably the bewitching Goldie Hawn, who wanders around in her undies for much of the time. She is utterly delightful in this. Edward Albert gives a sensitive performance as Don, and Eileen Heckard is absolutely wonderful as Don's mother. She deservedly won a supporting actress Oscar for her performance. The film was first released in 1972 and is a testament to the time. Free love and the hippie lifestyle and fashion will bring back memories for those who fondly remember the time. It may be a revelation to those who don't. Highly recommended and very enjoyable all round.

Sweet 70's comedy..
Sweet, touching comedy/drama from the early 70's about a young blind man leaving the clutches of his overbearing mother & living independently for the first time.He takes an apartment in San fransisco, promising his mother that he will come home within 3 months if he cant make it on his own.He then meets his kooky neighbour Jill(Goldie hawn) & the 2 quickly become romantically involved, only the relationship is threatened when his mother arrives, showing her disapproval for Jill & the way he is living.I really liked this, the majority of the film is set with just the 2/3 characters in the apartment(it was based on the broadway play of the same name) but it never once gets boring as i have found can happen with adaptions of plays.Goldie hawn was the main focus for me(& the reason i initially watched this)-she is cute & adorable as Jill(not to mention stunningly beautiful!) & anyone who loves Goldie will adore this movie :)
