The book takes off gruelingly, but picks up the pace and reads like an exciting quest in search of holy check list. The book has inspired me to introduce check lists in some routine tasks i perform at work.

I expected a book about how to write checklists, but instead I got a story about how one particular checklist - that saves thousands of lives every year - came about. That story in itself is worth reading. But the conclusions at the end of the book - about other places where checklists have made a difference, and why - are what really makes this a valuable book. Even though it is a few years old, it is still valuable.

名著Complicationsと同じ著者による本で、米国ではベストセラーになった。チェックリストと言えば瑣末なものと思いがちだが、航空機の運航から建設プロジェクトに至るまで、さまざまな領域で重要な役割を果たしている。外科医である著者がこれを外科手術に導入することを試みたところ、合併症の発生率を含め、治療結果が大幅に改善したということである。興味深いエピソードがふんだんに盛り込まれ、チェックリストの有用性が説得的に述べられている。

この本の主張を一言で要約すると「チェックリストがミスを減らす上で有用である」。著者は外科医なので医学関係の例が多い。しかし意外にも、飛行機の操縦、建築、料理など様々な分野でもチェックリストが有用であることが豊富な具体例とともに示されている。これらは複雑な手順を要する職業であるだけに、ミスが起こりやすい。言い換えれば、複雑なステップを踏まなくてはならないあらゆる局面においてチェックリストは有用であると言えそうだ。私にとってはp120の以下の記述も参考になった。Bad checklists are vague and imprecise. They are too long; they are hard to use; they are impractical. (中略) Good checklists, on the other hand, are precise. They are efficient, to the point.要するに、チェックリストを作るときのコツは、あまり長すぎるものや、実用的でないものにしてはならないということだ。私は複雑なチェックリストを作ったことがあるが、面倒くさくて続かなかった。その経験があるので、これは良いアドバイスだと感じた。具体例に割かれるページ数がやたら多いのが本書の特徴だ。良く言えば分かりやすいが、悪く言えば密度がやや薄い。欧米読者には、このくらいのほうがウケるのだろうか(本書はベストセラーになった)。
