Martin's Bombay India inks offer powerful color in a convenient dropper-stopper glass bottle. These highly pigmented India inks not only remain lightfast and permanent, but are also totally waterproof when dry. They adhere to nearly all surfaces and are non-clogging when used in pens. Inks can be diluted with water and used with brushes in traditional watercolor techniques or in dip pens, technical drawing pens, and airbrushes. The ink doesn't run and bleed everywhere, it works with every nib I've tried (quite a range, every modern leonardt, almost every modern speedball, several others), and almost every paper (anything your nib scratches to bits is obviously out of the question). It is a thicker ink than many others you might find--it flows beautifully, smooth without breaks, but you don't want to, say, leave it in a roundhand nib with a reservoir untouched for ten minutes. It is ink. It will dry. But that just leads me to another plus--it's easy to clean out. Once dry it flakes off nibs at the touch of fingernail, not counting unfortunate grooves. It responds well to nib cleaning solution, abd of course when wet (again, not counting grooves where any ink would get stuck) it wipes right off with paper. I've also found that it come out of my scrap cloth with little effort, but don't go spilling it on your carpet or favorite white shirt and expect it to come out. I just mean that the scrap I use for cleaning isn't blackened from these. They also are wonderful in painting, and again waterproof, so you can do things like soaking a drawing in tea to make it appear aged without worrying about losing the drawing. And so many colors. I have four sets now, and a couple of additional bottles of the colors I use very often (black, blue, red, brown, gold). Really. I cannot recommend these inks enough. If you're not sure that you'll make use of all the colors (though I find that I discover uses once I have them), buying individual bottles is an excellent idea. Thank you, Karen S/Blick Art Materials **Q: Are these inks translucent or opaque?** A: I've used them over the top of Winsor & Newton watercolor. Some are more opaque than others. All dry with a visible sheen, so you can definitely see them standing out from the more matte watercolor with light shining on them. I was using a glass dip pen directly from the bottle, not diluted, and using the dropper to make lines. Needed to wash the pen right away, and it took some work to get it all out of the grooves. I was happy with the colors and how fine the lines were that I could make. **Q: Are these inks acrylic based? I have a glass nibbed pen and I cannot use acrylic based ink in it without it gumming up.** A: India ink contains shellac. I have used these inks for years in abstract paintings. The range of colors is excellent. I do not use my watercolor brushes with this ink. I use brushes designed for acrylics-beware-whatever brushes you use will get stained.
