You can choose to play as one of three warlords and can create armies, research technologies and develop your empire through a series of scripted missions, as in a number of RTS games of this type. The 'painterly' graphics are functional but not outstanding (on a par with Age of Kings) and there are elements of gameplay which some players may find frustrating - particularly the fact that armies outside of cities have to be regularly re-supplied to keep them at full fighting strength. I also found the layered maps (where you have to send armies through a range of screens rather than across a single map to reach distant locations) a bit of a chore after a while. However, I enjoyed the historical premise and have learned something about a period in China's history of which I was previously ignorant. You can also send your troops to man walls in large pre-built cities, which was a big plus and there are various elements pinched from other games (Civilisation and Sim City for example) which give the game some strategic depth - periodic disasters hampering economic growth, the chance to arrange diplomatic agreements with other factions etc. All in all a competant Age of Empires/Age of Kings clone with some intersting additional touches.
