There was no break-in period, the shoes have been comfortable since day 1 and, as long as you are wearing the right socks, the back doesn't rub and blister the backs of your ankles. I haven't submerged them to test out the waterproof claim, but it rains a lot where I live and my feet are never wet after trudging through rain puddles.
