Range:0-0.2"  |  Resolution:0.001"  |  Part Number:196A5Z The Starrett 196 series universal dial indicator has a 0 to 0.2" measuring range with 0.001" graduations for precise measurement of the rise or drop in a work piece. It has a 0 to 100 counter with one revolution equivalent to 0.1", and the white-face dial has a scratch-resistant crystal face for ease of reading. The plunger on the back of the dial comes with 1/2", 5/16", and 1/8" diameter contact points. The dial indicator has a 1/4" diameter stainless-steel shank for mounting. Some dial indicator sets include an adapter, a standard letter of certification, and clamp, tool post holder, snug, and hole attachments. The dial indicator is suitable for applications such as quality control for machined parts.Dial indicators are also called dial gauges, probe, and electronic indicators. These precision instruments measure small linear distances and object sizes. The dial magnifies the measurement so that it can be easily read by the human eye. Frequently used in manufacturing, laboratories, and other industrial or mechanical fields, dial indicators are used anywhere a small measurement must be found and recorded or transferred, such as checking the variation in tolerance of a workpiece. Standard dial indicators measure the displacement along the axis of the indicator. Dial test indicators are very similar to dial indicators, except that the axis of measurement is perpendicular to the axis of the indicator. Dial and dial test indicators can be analog, with a mechanical dial, or electronic, with a digital display. Some electronic models transfer the data electronically to a computer for recording and potential manipulation. The L.S. Starrett Company manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology and testing equipment, and saw blade products. The company, founded in 1880, is headquartered in Athol, MA.

This is a great indicator.
This indicator is extremely useful for general purposes in a machine shop such as, tramming milling machine heads, vises, centering parts on a four jaw chuck, centering tailstocks, and with appropriate accessory, it can locate holes and do other internal gauging. Although it is graduated in .001", you can be more accurate than that with the indicator, since most of the time you will be indicating so that the needle does not move at all, not just that it moves less than one graduation. If I had tried this indicator out before buying other kinds, I would probably have not bought as many indicators as I have, it fills a lot of roles, and covers a good deal of the indicating requirements in a machine shop. It's also extremely rugged, easy to use, and accurate.

AMERICAN PRECISION & WORKMANSHIP
Aside from the inherent design perfection of this back plunger style dial indicator with its accessories (the kit 196A5Z), the workmanship, fit and finish of this little indicator are flawless. Anyone who has fiddled with a cheap dial indicator's too tight bezel and jumpy tip or plunger knows how a simple indicating task can turn into a pesky, time consuming exercise in frustration. None of that here! Well worth the money. You can't go wrong with this Starrett.
