Practical English Usage, 4th Edition Hardback with Online Access: Michael Swan's guide to problems in English

The British Council recommended this book (along with a few others) as a helpful resource for the CELTA course, so I purchased it and one other textbook. And honestly, this book is so much better! It surpassed my expectations. It is compact, yet helpful and full of useful information that otherwise would have been a pain to Google search for. There’s a helpful index at the back of the book, which I am making extensive use of for my pre-course task. Not to mention, the language is clear and concise. This is exactly what I needed. With all of that said, this is more of a reference for learning new information. This is NOT the book for you if all you’re looking for is some practice exercises, there aren’t any in this book.

If you study English, buy this book whatever your current level is (though it may seem a bit difficult for a beginner). Perhaps this is the only book you will ever need. If you have a friend who studies English, this would be a striking gift. Pros: - the book is beautifully designed in terms of publishing (overall quality, fonts, colors, etc.) and in terms of its structure (it is really well-thought-out); - the first part of the book comprehensively deals with grammar rules and usage; - the second part is devoted to vocabulary usage (for example, here you can find the explanations like: the difference in usage between "to begin" and "to start", "to end" and "to finish", "cloth" and "clothes", "classic" and "classical", "also", "as well" and "too", etc.). Cons: - honestly, I couldn't come up with a single shortcoming.

Bought for my grand daughter. Says it really helped in understanding the complexities of the English grammar.

My book was delivered in impeccable condition which I am very happy about. I am in the process of getting my online TEFL certification and after doing a lot of research on the best books/materials for ESL instructors (at any experience level), this one was perhaps the most highly recommended/mentioned resource.

I bought a "new" book but it doesn't look like new. Anyways, I am not going to return it because I am not interested in the cover or the form but the content. Maybe was the delivery 🤷🏽‍♀️. I’M VERY EXCITED to learn more about grammar and everywhere I found this recommendation, so I bought it right away and I can’t wait to improve my English with this tool. So far, the content looks good. Thanks.

I had used this book before, so I knew that the content of the book was good. This copy is a used book, which is in good condition, so I'm happy with it.

Received the book in a timely manner but please note the book is not "new". The shrink wrap was barely hanging on and there was a huge crease on the cover as pictured. However, the above does not affect the content of the book. The cover and paper quality are definitely not as sturdy as the non-international version I borrowed from the local library. The pages are much thinner and are printed in black and white instead of in color.

Das Buch war nötig für mein Studium, und hat mich äußerst positiv überrascht. Michael Swan nimmt sich hier diverser Problemfelder des Englischen an, und erklärt auf einfachste Weise selbst die schwierigsten Regeln (und Nicht-Regeln) aus allen möglichen Bereichen, und das ganz ohne unnötiges Fachchinesisch. Hier wird immer klar, dass das Ziel wirklich die Anwendung in der Praxis ist. Noch dazu ist das Buch wunderbar logisch aufgebaut, und funktioniert prima als Nachschlagewerk, speziell wenn mal mal nicht weiß, warum eine Regel so ist, wie sie ist. Eine Art Wörterbuch für sprachliche Regeln, sozusagen. Jedem Anglistikstudierenden würde ich das Buch wärmstens empfehlen, selbst wenn die jeweilige Universität das Buch nicht vorschreibt. Aber auch jedem Pädagogen, Nachhilfelehrer, oder Menschen der sonstwie im Alltag mit Englisch zu tun hat, würde ich stets zu "Practical English Usage" raten.

Viene spesso indicato tra i migliori libri per chi studia o insegna l'inglese. È facile capire perché: copre tutti gli argomenti della grammatica inglese, con capitoli sintetici ma esaustivi, fornendo ottimi esempi di frasi che aiutano a comprendere il tema. A mio avviso è un libro da consultazione, da avere a portata di mano quando si hanno dubbi. Per questo è particolarmente indicato per chi ha già una sufficiente conoscenza dell'inglese e lo usa magari in contesti lavorativi o perché magari cura degli scritti in inglese o perché si trova in situazioni in cui è necessario esprimersi frequentemente in tale lingua. NON è un libro per chi deve iniziare da zero e cerca magari una grammatica strutturata che parta dalle basi per poi progredire gradualmente. Feedback positivo anche per il venditore Galleriadellibro da cui l'ho preso usato a meno della metà del prezzo nuovo, in buonissime condizioni.

Livro muito bom! Excelente gramática! Melhor que a maioria das gramáticas que se encontra por aí.
