Buy this book if visiting DPRK
This book contains some great background information, needed for anyone planning a trip to North Korea! The tourist information is also interesting, but I felt that the cultural context was the most important.

... guide written by Robert Willoughby or one of the other editions. Which comes out on a somehow regular base since my first from 2003... Covering the capital, Pyongyang, in detail, this guide offers in-depth information on the practical aspects of travelling to and around North Korea, including access from South Korea via the Hyundai ferry and from Beijing. It provides information on everything a traveller needs, including festivals and culture, socialising and security issues, and routes outwards from Pyongyang, various tour options and opportunities for excursions into unspoiled countryside. The guide offers an insight into the culture and history of a country that currently exists in virtual isolation from the rest of the world. This newer Bradt guide explores every aspect of visiting North Korea, from day-to-day practicalities to an overview of the history that lies behind this troubled region and the culture that still unites the Korean people. Inside you will find: information on organized tours and independent access from China; the capital, Pyongyang, in detail; socialising and security; cultural do's and don'ts; restaurants and nightlife; national parks and mountain walks; clear maps and town plans. A new edition of the first travel guide to cover the practical aspects of travelling to and around North Korea -- a country which both intrigues and concerns the international community. Altogether a fascinating insight into the culture and history of a country that currently exists in virtual isolation from the rest of the world. So - whoever of You who wants to go there, be prepared and read one of Robert Willoughby's Guides first. They are as unforgettable as the country he writes about! A real unique experience... The fotos show at the left the newer edition from 2014 and at the right the first edition from 2003...

Although this book (in an earlier edition) is out of date, I actually found it relatively so for much of what has happened this year re. the DPRK is a repetition of past decades. The writer is well informed and this seems to cover every aspect of life in this basically unknown country, it opens up many interesting aspects of this country, its tourist attractions, the beauty of the country and allure of the Korean people themselves.

The only travel guide exclusively on North Korea at the moment. LP and others include the North as an appended section in books on Korea, on which the focus is predominantly the South. This is detailed, long on words and short on pictures; and in conjunction with other relevant reading on North Korea can give one a good grounding before departure. Bear in mind this is in the process of a third edition and although not much may have changed, you may want to wait until that is due out in August.

This book is an essential for any visitor to North Korea whether they be a tourist or on a business trip. The layout is very similar tothe 2003 edition with some sections being virtually unchanged. After dealing with the capital 9 areas of the country are given adetailed description-the ones on the border areas are excellent.Wher this book falls down are a)the offwhite colour of the paper withthe small type which makes it difficult to read and b)the small and minimal pictures.North Korea is a very picturesque which deserves better.
