Great Product!!!
What I like about Baby Einstein products is that every product in some way is linked to another therefore you are able to re-enforce what you are teaching your child or grand child if you use Baby Einstein products.Although this product doesn't show real animals it shows the animals, cars and etc. in away that is less threatening to a baby. I mean although the Discovery Cards says 9months and up I started my grand daughter on Discovery Cards at 3 months for about 15 minutes a day and the pictures look like the toys in her crib or her play mat. This opens the door for me to show her the names of different things even if it is not the actually animal etc.I like the fact that they give you 3 extra blank cards to make it your own for the child or grand child. You can place a picture of a sibling that is away at school, or place a picture of the parent that maybe working while the caregiver is watching the child. You can put a picture of their favorite food on the card. The sky is the limit and everything else is only hampered by your own imgination. They give you suggestions on how to use the cards...Which I think is great!!! You don't have to follow that format but sometimes after a long day at work your brain is fried and there you go right on the back of the cards is away to make your day a little easier.I also like the 7 different languages on the back of the Discovery Cards that are spelled with phonics(always a winner for me).I feel that for a Baby these cards do the trick when they get older then you can introduce the real life animal or you can tell your child/grand child that this is a stuffed animal or whatever in the picture. For example they have a pig which is a stuffed animal on the card you can then introduce a book that shows real pigs to the child; of course when they are ready. This enables you to talk to the child and also helps widen their imginations.I don't think we give children enough credit and I also don't know if we as adults realize if we keep it simple we can bring them the world.Bottom line is this is a great product to introduce your child/grandchild to the world of language.

Best Baby Einstein item I've bought!!!
My son and I absolutely love these cards. It's very educational and my son spoke his first word as soon as I pointed to one card. The quality is great; each card is laminated to last you many years. All the items in the cards are found in other Baby Einstein videos/dvds. I especially love the teaching aides and words in various languages on the back of the cards to help parents use the cards effectively. I found that it's not only educational for the child but for the parent as well.

Learning Cards
My daughter who is 1 likes these. I like them because they are helping her learn object names and what the words look like. She likes them for the nice illustrations. They are a good size for her to hold after we have gone over each one and she likes to collect certain animals in piles. There are a few blank cards in the pile so I taped pictures of family members onto them and labeled the cards with the person's name so she could see their picture, see their name and hear me say it at the same time to help her learn who everyone is. The cards are sturdy and great for taking along in her diaper bag. I agree with other reviewers that although I understand that many of the cards have pictures on them from the Baby Einstein videos and are connected that way, things like the "star" need a picture of a real star not a toy because it is not easily identifiable. All in all, best language development cards I have found for young children.

Only for children who can read or helped by someone.
Cards are useful to teach children but you have to involve them and offer a perfect pronunciation of the words. Otherwise they not appreciate them until they can read easily the letters.

Son Sparkled. Mom Sparkled Too!
We love these cards! By we, I mean our entire family. I purchased these for my 18 month old. We already had the video and was delighted with it, and I thought these would be a great extension to further explore other languages. My son absolutely beamed over the pictures, espicially the peas, the dog, and the firetruck. I love that I'm learning with him, and it is easy because the pronunciations are spelled out in a way that is easy to understand. He knows over half of the cards in Spanish by now. Additionally, and unforseen, my eighteen year old and her boyfriend like to hold the cards up and try to pronounce the words in all of the languages: Spanish, French, Russian, German, Hebrew, Japanese. They laugh as they are learning. It is great interaction for all of us!

Serious Warning
As a homeschooling mom (myself raised by teachers) I was very disturbed by the BE Language Discovery Cards I bought for my 1 yr. old. But first I'll mention the positives: the cards have large letters and colorful pictures. On the back are teaching tips, and the word from the front of the card is written in 6 other languages with pronunciation provided. I almost gave 2 stars just for this aspect. Now for the bad: I was disgusted that many of the pictures that are supposed to represent words are stuffed animals, abstract toys, and other confusing items that just don't represent the word well. Examples: the word CAT has a picture of a shiny, slick plastic cat figurine while the tip on the back says, "cats have soft fur". The word STAR has a picture of something like a teething toy with round corners - it barely looks like a star. The word BEAR is represented by a ceramic statuette of a bear wearing a suit and playing a violin. The teaching tips say, "This bear is playing a violin" and also, "Bears live in the woods". Hmmm... since they think I need tips on teaching my baby, it would help if they would explain how bears who live in the woods can obtain suits and violin lessons. Don't plan to raise a scholar on these cards unless you plan to do a lot of un-teaching
