The coarse grind shear plate has holes that are about 0.155" diameter. The meat feed throat is tapered from about 1.990" to 2.025" diameter. Purchased in Canada, worked fine. Took it on vacation accidently to Mexico, worked fine there too. At home in the US it refused to work unless I provided affordable but comprehensive health insurance so it wouldn't have to go back to Mexico if it needed an affordable procedure. After resolving that it seemed to work fine in the US without many issues. **Q: With the body in aluminum not steel (probably uncommon and expensive), have some concern if this is strong enough. Some say yes. Is it strong enough?** A: It is made of aluminum of sufficient thickness, so it is strong enough to do job it is designed for. Aluminum is not as hard as steel, but if you are planning to grind meat, even with bones (if you like their taste), rather than pieces of steel, it will not be damaged, it will stay usable. Aluminum is typically used for body of a meat grinder, so you should not worry. We have experience of very many years of usage of multiple manual (not electric) meat grinders with aluminum bodies; no damage to them. **Q: I see the STX Magnum 1800 is recommended for use in a BARF diet for pets but is unavailable, is there any other grinder choice?** A: I dont know about the barf diet but if it involves ground meat you can get a grinder attachment for a kitchenaid mixer and i know the vita mixer will chop meat on a small batch basis. Other than that maybe you can get a used one from a restaurant supplier or buy a used one from an auction from a supermarket or restaurant.
