The Wood Duck and the Mandarin: The Northern Wood Ducks

Good illustrations.
I raise both Mandarins and Wood Ducks and learned a lot about them from this book. The illustrations are very good and despite what one negative reviewer claims, these illustrations are much better than anything on the internet.

ordered book based on publishers description and reviews.
it is well written with a few closeup pictures of each species; however, internet photos of mandarine are sharper with more intimate examples of grooming. so one has to have both sources for incisive photos.

as the male features pretty and unique plumage and the female and the male ...
The mandarin ducks carry special sentiments for East Asian cultures, as the male features pretty and unique plumage and the female and the male signify devoted love in human relationships. These birds as a pair appear in paintings, embroidery, other decorative art objects and postal stamps in Japan, Korea and China (as a culture). This book is valuable as it shows mandarin ducks in nature as they are, not just in art or as an image. Sometimes though, the real animals may not be actually as inspirational. In March 2010 I saw a peacock strolling free in the zoological park in Philadelphia. Its behaviour when facing a pop-soda vending machine made me have second thoughts about the "elegance" of real-life beautiful birds.
