Incredibly well written - and no teenagers
Absolutely love these books! I started reading the first one quite reluctantly as it was given to me by a relative even though I didn't have much interest in this kind of content. I needed something to keep my mind off of this coronavirus isolation so I started reading. I ended up ordering the trilogy and reading all of them in less than a week!It is obvious the writer is an academic as the books are so well researched and written that I felt I was there, experiencing it all.Things I liked the most:- the writer successfully plays with science which makes the fictional world grounded and tangible- the characters are adults. No teenagers in high school.- main character is an accomplished scholar. A welcome change from the usual writer/editor/fashion-this-and-that choice of main female character's profession in pop culture- the possessiveness and patriarchy is well handled so it doesn't come across as romanticised. They are both behaving as adults.- a lot of it is set in Oxford where I live and it is obvious the writer knows it well. Going to town will never be the same!

A cross genre inter species love story.
Good service from Amazon. Fast delivery. I’d streamed the first season and couldn’t wait for a year till they’d finished filming the second season so I bought the books.I enjoyed reading them. I was transported into Matthew’s world and as I was reading the characters materialized around me. At times I felt like a fly on the wall. For me the second book wasn’t as good as the other two. There were lots of descriptions of rooms and city layouts. Almost as if the author was showing off their knowledge of history. I also felt the love story stalled a little. The third book tied up all the loose ends and the love story matured and was more believable for me.I think what I liked the most was that the lovers supported each other through all the trials and tribulations that befell them. And they were both still alive and though changed by their experiences were still in love at the end. So many of these stories descend into darkness and evil triumphs and everyone you invest in dies.Well worth a read. The books cross genres from romantic to vampire fantasy to historical mystery.

perfect!
This book series may be my favourite series of all time. You cannot help but fall in love with Diana and Matthew, and all the family that comes with them! Deborah Harkness knows how to write characters that will make you laugh or cry or angry with rage (I am looking directly at you Benjamin).Along with the gorgeous narrative of the main couple and their love story, we are also lucky enough to dive into the history of the side characters and the hardships which they have all faced. These books tell important moral lessons which strike deep with the readers and they help make us feel closer to them than we could’ve possibly imagined.

Odd mix, but it works
These books have a degree of mastery. Its primarily a smoochy love story, with this weird mix of genetic engineering, ancient texts, and gothic fantasy. Although largely set in the modern era, the middle book ingeniously goes back to Elizabethan times, where it gives a rather different interpretation of many of the era's major players. Fun, a good read , with its own idiosincratic twists.

A great read
I gave this as a gift but do not know yet whether the recipient has enjoyed it as much as I did.I bought this for myself some time ago and could not put it down. Given the subject matter I was unsure at first whether I would like it, but it is so well written and different that I thoroughly enjoyed it. However, if you do not like novels that take you back and forth in time, then you probably will not appreciate it.
